Sun
The nearest star to the Earth is called the Sun. Our planet takes a year to circle, or orbit the Sun. The Earth spins around once every 24 hours. The side facing the Sun has daylight. The other side has night.

The Sun is a huge ball of gases, spinning in space. As its centre the gas hydrogen is turned into helium. Light and heat are given out in a great burst of energy. Huge tongues of hot gas shoot out into space. Its diameter is 1,392,000km and its mass is 2 x 1000000000000000000000000000 tonnes.
