Kids at Limekiln Bay

Across the beach, Limekiln Bay is cradled among Frye Island, Hills Island, Bar Island and Flea Islands.

The bay was once considered as a naval base during the war of 1812 and was used for a short time by the British Navy until it was decided that it could too easily hemmed in by the Americans and the idea was abandoned.

Prior to that, it is speculated that colourful characters, the likes of Captain Kidd, etc., have used the sheltered area as a temporary hideout through the buccaneer years of the 1600's.

Our boys spent their days there playing pirates while running up and down the beach, digging through the seaweed looking for rock crabs and periwinkles and throwing rocks into the sea.

Jail Island lies just offshore and is barely visible in this photo taken at higher tide. Click on the photo for a full size view and you will see the island beside the edge of the veranda.

A small jail once existed here and housed the unfortunate scallywags who had difficulty adhering to the strict laws of St. George in the old days.
