Time Required: 6-7 hrs

Class Size: 15-30

Level: Intermediate, Advanced

Material Req.: Computer program. Copy of material. One room for each company. Signs for each company taped next to company's location.

Optimum Time: Monday, week 4or 5.

Aim: For each company to run a "successful" business.

Background: Simulates the car industry. Similar, but less complicated, to Widgets 2000. Computer program has much on-line help.

Procedure: Inbrief - Introduce market. Explain how selling price affects market share. Explain basic accounting, stock facility assembly plant calculations. Hand out cover sheet. Students read. Divide into companies and send each to their room.

Strategy - Students work on strategy especially: selling price policy, stock policy, when to introduce new model, when to open new assembly plant.

Schedule for 2001 - Students prepare schedules for 2001 including: production, investment in automation, labour wage, selling price, advertisement etc. Hand in to teacher.

Run model - Teacher inputs data into computer model, runs, saves and prints output. Gives copy to each group.

Repeat - Repeat above two steps (schedule and run) for years 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Open Time - Students visit other companies to discuss strategies, form cartels and share information.

Run model for years 2005, 2006, 2007

Debrief - Each company presents performance graphs showing market share, profit, productivity etc.

Teacher's Role: You will be very busy running computer program. Make sure you understand how to do this well in advance.

Additional Notes: Simulation can be run with as few as 3 teams of as many as 7. Take-overs are allowed. Government group can be formed to monitor and set overall policy.

If time is short/long?: If short, run less years. Don't hold open time. Need to run minimum five years to understand model. If long, simulate more years. Hold more open time sessions and meetings.
