***!!!Find
To find an individual or family or other entries within the gedcom file, select View | Find (or press ctl-F or click the Find icon). The Find screen will appear.

Type in up to four search strings in the Find what text box. Separate the strings with spaces. Click the Find button and the program will search for entries that contain all the search strings. If only one entry is found, then this will be listed automatically on a new screen. If more than one entry is found, then the entries will appear in the Results drop down box on the Find screen. Click the drop down box and select the entry you wish to view. The program will then list that entry.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Find contains some interesting routines for searching the gedcom file. To use these features, click on the More button on the Find screen. The screen will expand to reveal a drop down box. Click on the drop down box and select the appropriate search. If a value is required, this should be entered in the text box to the right of the drop down box. Click the Go button to perform the search.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Click the OnTop button to keep the Find screen on top all the time.

***!!!List
You can list individuals or families or other entries using the List drop down box on the main screen. Select the item you want and the List screen will appear showing the entry you requested. If you requested a current individual or family, then the value in the Current text box will be used.

On the List screen, click anywhere in column 1 of the table to display the entity. Click the face icon to show all individuals. Click again to show all families.

If an individual is displayed on the List screen, you can click the family tree icon (the Viking helmet) and the program will display the family tree with this individual as head.

When displaying individuals or families, click on the arrows on the left to cycle back and forth through the entities.

Use the arrows on the right to cycle between previous screens.

Note: If the gedcom file is very large, then the List screen may take some time to appear. Please be patient.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Information listed on the list screen is mostly self-explanatory, although a few items need to be described here:

Occ = occupation of individual

Fams 1 = the code number of the family where the individual is the senior (i.e. either father or mother). If the individual married twice then Fams 2 will be present.
Famc = the code number of the family where the individual is a child. There can only be one code number per individual.

Clicking on either Fams or Famc (in column 1) will cause the family information to be listed.

Age = The program attempts to intelligently calculate the age of an individual if alive or the age at death. Where both birth and death dates are present in the gedcom file, whether whole or partial, a calculation can be made. Where only the birth date is given, then the current date is used to calculate the age of the person. If the person is over 100 years old, then the words "if alive" are attached to the result. When neither birth or death date is given, or where strange wording is encountered in the date string, the words "cannot calculate" are displayed. Dates are assumed to be in the order DD MMM YYYY which is the standard for gedcom files.

***!!!Tree
The family tree can be displayed in two ways:

(1) from top: the program will search for the ancestor at the top of the tree (the one with the most Descendants) and display the tree from this person.

(2) from current: the program will display the family tree with the individual specified in the Current text box as head.

In both cases, the family tree will initially be shown with Most Descendants set. This means the program will display the family line which has the most descendants. This is the most useful because it will normally yield the maximum number of individuals on the tree.

However, you may wish to view the family tree showing the eldest child for each generation. In this case, on the Tree screen, right click on an individual's name and select Show Descendants | eldest child.

To make an individual the head, right click on the name and select Set top.

To traverse up and down the tree, use the up /down arrows at the top in the centre. When traversing up the tree, the message "No parent information" may be displayed. This indicates that there is no information in the gedcom file about the parents of the person who is at the head of the tree (the top most person). If this is the case, you may have reached the limit of the tree. However, if you try reversing the head and the spouse so that the spouse becomes the head, extra information on ancestors may be possible. To do this, right click on the spouse of the head (the second person in the tree hierarchy) and select Set top. Then click the up arrow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can change the way the tree is drawn be selecting or deselecting various items from the View menu on the Tree screen. These include:

(1) Dates: the birth and death date of the individual (if available) are written just below the name.
(2) Family surnames: the family surname which is written just below the spouse of the family. The surname of the father of the family is assumed.
(3) Descendant mark (+): A plus sign which is displayed next to a child or spouse who has Descendants.
(4) Main Line: A line in bold showing the main line from the head individual down to the bottom child.
(5) No spouse: removes the spouse from the tree to make it easier to view.

Font size can be changed using the Font menu. Select from (1) Small (2) Medium (3) Large (4) Largest. Medium size fonts provide the best balance between detail and easy viewing.

Open and save view: When you have a particular view of a family tree the way you want, you can save this view by selecting File | Save view (or clicking the save icon). To see this view later on, select File | Open view. Only one view can be saved at any one time.

HTML Report: You can generate a HTML report by right clicking on a person and selecting Create HTML from the drop down menu. The report will be generated as gen.htm in the applications directory.

***!!!Options
Various parameters can be set using the Options screen. To access this screen, select View | Options from the main screen (or the Tree screen).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
General
Autoload: type in the name of a gedcom file (*.ged) which you want to be automatically loaded on startup of the program. Alternatively, click the Browse button and navigate to the file. The next time the program is started, the Autoload file will be loaded.

Surname appearance: You can alter the way surnames are displayed in the program by selecting from the drop down box:

STYLE EXAMPLE
Normal John Smith
CAPITALS	John SMITH
/Slash/ John /Smith/
/SLASH/ John /SMITH/
Lowercase	John Smith
/Lowercase/	John /Smith.

Normal will preserve the style of the original gedcom file but without the slashes. Thus if the surname is capital in the gedcom, then it will be displayed in capitals in the program. Lowercase with force the name to be displayed in lowercase (with the first letter in capital, of course).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tree
This tab allows the user to change various options for the Tree screen (see help on Showing the family tree).

All options are saved to the registry when the Okay button is clicked. This options will then be in effect when you next start the program.
