| The report estimates that by the middle of 2006: - SA's population had grown to about 48 million people , of which 5,4 million ,or 11% of the total population , had HIV - 19% of the working-age population (between ages 20 and 64) was infected - The HIV-prevalence rate in women was highest between the ages of 25 and 29 (33%), while in men , prevalence was highest between the ages of 30 and 34 (27%) - About 230,000 HIV-positive people were receiving anti-retroviral treatment and a further 540,000 were sick with AIDS but were not on treatment - 1,5 million children under the age of 18 were orphans and 66% of them had been orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS - 1,8 million Aids-related deaths had occured in SA since the pandemic started |
