Bartholomew Sharrai, Sr., with his wife, had five sons and three daughters. They were from near Toronto and Montreal, Canada. The family journied by water to Detroit, and from that point traveled almost the entire distance on foot to Bertrand, in Berrien County, Michigan where they settled in 1828. Later, about 1833, they settled upon an 80-acre tract in Section 8, Bainbridge Township, being the first pioneer family in that area.

The family, known as the "French-Canadian Family", lived together and spent a portion of their time clearing the land and cultivating crops, and boating on the St. Joseph River. It was about this time they dropped one of the "r's" from the last name. Research in Canada says the family claimed the original name was "Charest", which they changed to Sharrai (they pronounced it "Sha-rye-ah").

Shortly after settling in Bainbridge, Bartholomew, Sr. became quite ill and was being taken to St. Joseph, Michigan for medical treatment, but died on the way. His sons did not remain in the township very long after other settlers began to come in. Peter, Luke and Tenos moved to Sodus Township in Berrien County. Peter, although considered a settler, spent much of his time in boating on the St. Joseph River. The son Louis drowned in the St. Joseph River when a young man.

Tennos (Tenos, Tannos, Tanos, was a native of Canada, born near Toronto, and came to Berrien County as a boy with his parents. The family home was established near Bainbridge Township, Michigan.

Tennos moved from Bainbridge Township to Sodus Township to occupy and cultivate a farm which his brother Luke purchased, while Luke continued to follow the river. Tennos occupied the place about a year and then purchased a farm on the bank of the St. Joe (Joseph) River, and there continued his home for twelve years, after which he removed to the farm where his son Edwin was born and where he made his home. Edwin later took over the farm and called it "Shady Lawn Farm".

Tennos married Miss Louisa (Eliza) Wheeler, a native of New York state, who came with her parents to Michigan at an early day, the Wheeler family home being established in St. Joseph, Michigan, where her father, John Wheeler, was a lumberman and one of the pioneer settlers of Berrien County. Tennos Sharai is buried in Bethel Cemetary, Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Notes for EDWIN SHARAI:

[23423.ged.FTW]

[v14f1703.FTW]

Edwin Sharai was born on section 22, Sodus Township, Berrien County, Michigan on the farm which was his home until at least February 13, 1948. His father was Tannos Sharai, and his mother Louisa Wheeler Sharai.

Edwin Sharai was the second child and second son of his father's family, and was reared and educated in his native township. He, however, started out at the early age of twelve years to earn his own living by working by the day and month at farm labor. During his youth he also learned the carpenter's trade and for sixteen years was connected with the building operations of Berrien County. In 1864, at the time of the Civil War, his private business interests were interrupted, when, at the age of seventeen years, he enlisted for service for one year on September 12, 1864 at Niles Michigan, joining Company H, Twenty-fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry as a private, and he served until the close of hostilities, taking part in the battles of Weldon Road, Hatch's Run, Petersburg, and many other important engagements, and was honorably discharged at the close of hostilities, being mustered out at Detroit, Michigan on June 30, 1865.

Returning to his home in Sodus Township, Edwin then resumed his work at the carpenter's trade for several years, meeting with good success in his work. In 1870, Edwin was united in marriage to Miss Jennie I. Welch, who died, leaving three children: Clara, Bert and Maude, and he later wedded Margaret Hanson, who was born in St. Joseph, Berrien County.

In 1876, Edwin moved with his family to California, settling in the San Jose Valley, where he remained for two years, working at the carpenter's trade. He returned to Berrien County, where he continued his work in that line for several years, and in 1891 he and his wife made a second trip to the Pacific coast, remaining in the west for about six months. They made the return trip by team, camping along the way, the journey requiring four months and two days. He then made his home on the old homestead property, situated on section 22, Sodus Township, where he carried on general agricultural pursuits, and here he also entertained summer boarders, calling his summer resort "Shady Lawn Farm".

He was a member of General H. Thomas Post, No. 14, G.A.R., at Benton Harbor, thus maintaining pleasant relations with his old army comrades. He was a stalwart Republican, giving active and helpful support to his party, and was interested in all that tends to promote the progress of his home locality. With the exception of about three years, a part of which time was spent on the Pacific coast, Edwin had always resided in Berrien County, covering a period of almost six decades and he was well-known in social and business circles. Although starting out at the early age of twelve years, dependent entirely upon his own resources for a living, he has worked his way steadily upward until his was in possession of a valuable property and is numbered among the prominent and influential citizens of this part of the state.

Notes for KATHLEEN GAIL EGAN:

Hales Genealogy

(Rev. dated 8/24/99)

My genealogy search began in the 1970's in Hawaii. I owe my interest in our past to Auntie Millie Phillips. She is credited for collecting much of the family information the old fashioned way, with interviews and pen and paper. My family search was also pushed on by my father, Raymond Lee Egan Sr. He was told by his family that his family history went back to Robert E. Lee from Virginia. He remembered his father tracing the family genealogy, but all was lost in a cousin's move to Florida. At this writing (August 1999) I now have 1600 names in my Family Tree Maker program. I also have created a web site with various genealogy reports on the Hales, Hilliard, Egan, Lee, Rawlins/DeRego, Farrell, Gonsalves, and Affonso families. This site is at: http://www.geocities.yahoo.com/heartland/grove/5994.

The "family" as I will call it for now, is the make up of individuals from England, Ireland, Portugal, now even Venezuela with our grandchildren, Hawaii and across the continental U.S. It begins as long ago as the1450s (19 generations) with my husband's ggrandmother's family on the Hales side from Yorkshire, England and their entrance into the US before 1650 at Isle of Wight, VA; and, the Lee family (13 generations) who arrived in 1634 from Glouchester, England . John Lee and 18 other families purchased 85 square miles from the Indians in 1641and is a founding father of Farmington, Connecticut. The Hilliard family goes back to Carroll County Tennessee in 1763. The Gonsalves and Affonso (Alfonso after the Immigration Service changed their name) families arrived in the US in 1907 from Camacha, Maderia, Portugal on the ship Kumeric. It took them 52 days to sail around the tip of Africa to arrive in Hawaii for a life with the sugar plantation.

The Hawaii connection began with the union of Raymond Lee Egan and Margaret Marie Alfonso and Anita Florence Farrell and Charles Walter Hales. Both girls were raised in the small sugar plantation town of Waipahu, HI and went to school and began work together. Both girls met and married young men who came to the islands after Pearl Harbor was attacked. Margaret Marie Alfonso and Raymond Lee Egan married in April 1942. Anita Florence Farrell and Charles Walter Hales married in April 1944. Margaret and Ray moved around the US with the Navy and returned to the islands in November 1954 with Carol and Kathleen. Anita stayed in Hawaii and had two sons, Robert Hales and Roy Cage. Rob as we call him, stole Kathy's bike and tried to get her golden Easter egg! He really stole her heart many years later in 1965 when he returned to the islands from California where he, his brother and mother lived for ten years. He returned to live with Auntie Millie in Pearl City, HI. At this writing he still has her heart after almost 35 years!!!

The search for roots is an exciting adventure. The Lee family (Raymond Lee Egan's grandmother's line) was a challenge. Raymond Egan's grandmother's family never stayed in one place for long. The search began in Vermont, went to New York, to LaCross Wisconsin, to Ohio to build the capital in Columbus Ohio, ending eventually in Benton Harbor, MI. This was in the 1860 - 1920 time frame. We hit the jackpot when we found a book on the Lee family at the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in Washington, D.C. It took my fathers grandmother's family back to 1634! Such luck. What a day that was!

The Alfonso/Gonsalves are recent immigrants to this country from Camacha, Mederia, Portugal in 1907. Margaret Alfonso Egan (Kathy Hales' mother) is a first generation American. The information gathered on both sides of her family was from discussions with my grandmother, and the pictures my mother has collected over time from her mother and aunt's collection. My grandmother, Marie Gonsalves Alfonso was 9 years old when they boarded the Kumeric in Camacha, Madeira, Portugal. She said they were to leave a few weeks earlier but because of small pox, they had to wait. They had given all their things away except what they were to take with them, so it was hard going back to the empty house. She told me the 52-day trip was not bad for her, since she was only 9 and had the run of the ship. My grandfather, Charlie as they called him, was also a single young man when he sailed from the same island with his family also on the Kumeric. Both families arrived in the islands in 1907 and went to the Big Island of Hawaii to work at the Honomu Sugar Plantation. They worked there for a few years to meet their contract obligations, then relocated to Oahu, and their parents began work at Oahu Sugar.

My grandmother, Mary Alfonso, was a very smart young woman. She wanted to be a school teacher, but because her father had died, she left school after grade 8 to begin work to help support her mother. She worked at a hat shop and even made the hat she wore on her wedding day to Charles Alfonso. She lived out her 97 years in Wahiawa, HI most of those years in the house she and grandpa were building when he died at age 62 of a massive heart attack while getting ready to take a bath. I was only 10 when that happened. I remember very clearly that day since it was the first death in the family that I was aware.

Most recently at the http://familysearch.com LDS site I found the Foljambe/Daniel (Robert Hales grandfather's mother's line on his father's side) and it goes back to the 1400's. I must trust the information is accurate since it would be very difficult to verify beyond the US border. The Hales line includes information back to James Hales to the 1840 period. I still need to do a lot of research on this line. The Hilliard research (Robert Hales grandmother's family on his father's side) was rather easy since they stayed in the general area in Nash County, North Carolina and into Carroll County, Tennessee close to the border of North Carolina. Wrightman Hilliard was born in North Carolina in 1763. They were owners of 8 slaves that were willed to his wife upon his death.

Raymond Lee Egan was born in Chicago, IL on March 7, 1921. He had one sister and two step brothers. He lost his mother Clara Belle Hanson Egan when he was only 2 years old and his sister Betty was an infant. They say she died of a broken heart from being moved from her family and a small town, Beton Harbor, in Michigan to the big city of Chicago. Her husband, my grandfather, Lee Raymond Egan was a salesman, so was away from home much of the time. Lee also became a proprietor and an accountant before his death. Lee Raymond remarried when Raymond was about 6 years old. He has two half brothers, Gene and James Egan. Raymond joined the service at age 19 after spending two years in college. He saw 2 wars, WWII and Korea. In 1954 he participated in the underwater testing of the Wigwam test of the atomic bomb. He was on the ship that towed the bomb and put it in place, and lowered it in the water. He went below deck until it was detonated, but came up with dark glasses to witness the mushroom cloud that formed. He is 78 at this writing, so it must have not harmed him too much thank goodness. He retired from the Service in 1960 to become a gas salesman. Dad is not a salesman. He likes to give away anything he has to sell, so he moved back into his medical field and became a hospital administrator for about 12 years. From there he took a fun job with the Shriners organization, as the Recorder for the Aloha Temple for two stints, one for 12 years and after a three year break, he served for another three years, just fully retiring at age 76 in 1997. He spends his time now supervising my mother! and his yard at 522 Hoomalu Street, Pearl City Hawaii.

Raymond and Margaret Egan left the islands for their navy tours in October 1945 with Carol Lee Egan who was born on April 7, 1944 and was 18 months old at the time. They stayed away for 10 years until we returned in November 1954. They went to the east coast for their first tour in South Carolina. I was born at the Jacksonville Naval Station Hospital, Jacksonville, Florida on November 5, 1946. Carol and I went to Trinadad with our parents, then to Camp Le June and Norfolk, VA where I started school. We crossed the country by car to the next tour in San Diego, CA. In 1954 we sailed back to the islands on the USS Monterrey, where Carol stayed in her bed for the 4 or 5 day crossing. Dad was already in the islands aboard a ship.

We lived in Moanalua in a quanset hut for a few months. Then we moved to Radford Terrace for navy housing. Dad was reassigned from Pearl Harbor to Lualualei and we then moved to the Naval Ammunition Depot where we spent two years. While there, Carol and I were bused to school over Kolekole Pass to Schofield School. When she moved to Radford High School, I rode on her bus to St. Joseph's School in Waipahu, HI for grades 6 through 8. We moved to our home in Pearl City in 1958. Raymond Lee Egan Jr. was born at that home on February 18, 1959. Carol graduated from Radford High School in June 1962. I graduated from St. Joseph and went to Pearl City Intermediate and then to Pearl City High School for my remaining grades 9 through 12, where I graduated in June 1964. Raymond went to Our Lady of Good Counsel School through 8th grade and graduated from St. Louis High School.

Anita Farrell was married Charles Walter Hales in Hawaii in April 1944. Charles was in the army. He went on a tour in Saipan. Anita traveled alone to his home in Wilson North Carolina to await Charles who was leaving the service. It was an experience that she recalls with vivid memory. She speaks well of Oren Hales who was a candy salesman. He was the only individual in the family who seemed to have any compassion or fondness for her. Even the family doctor would not acknowledge that she was pregnant with her first son, Robert. She left the Hales home when she was three months pregnant and traveled by train across the country to her family in California. From there she took a ship to Hawaii. Rob was born in Tripler Hospital on April 9, 1946. He was a premature baby and weighed in at 4 lbs 1 oz. He went down to less than 3 lbs. He now weighs in at ?????? So his first days did nothing for weight control!

Robert Hales and Kathleen Egan married and moved to an apartment on Kings Street. Rob joined the army reserves rather than being drafted into the regular army and the Vietnam war. He left Hawaii for his 6 months of active reserve training in Fort Ord for basic training and to Maryland for school. Before he left, he found out he was going to be a father. He returned to the islands three days after his daughter, Dawn Elizabeth Hales, was born on September 5, 1966. He worked for Pan American World Airways, and returned there after he came back from active reserves. The three of us moved to a duplex in Waipahu for 9 months until our home in Pacific Palisades, Pearl City was built. There we had Robert Wendell Hales Jr. on April 1, 1969. In 1981 after many years of downsizing at Pan Am, we decided to relocate to another station and moved to Houston TX. We lived in Houston until Rob left for a solo stint in New York at JFK from 1984 until January 1987. He then transferred to the new station in Washington DC (Dulles) and I transferred to the IRS National Office in June 1987.

Dawn and Bobby stayed in Texas, Dawn in her third year at the University of Texas in Austin, and Bob starting as a freshman there. Bob joined us in Virginia to finish up his degrees and graduated from George Mason University where he got his masters degree in Business. Dawn finished her masters degree and got her CPA while working for one of the big six accounting firms in Houston. Both children have very responsible jobs in their fields, Dawn as a CPA and Assistant Controller with the largest privately owned construction company in the US and Bob as a Senior Consultant in software development in the internet environment.

Dawn married Hector Roman Silva in Moanalua Gardens on September 5, 1994. Brianna Lee Silva was born in Houston TX on March 27, 1996. Brianna will have some competition with a little sister due next month on September 23, 1999. Grandparenting is great! Bob is engaged at this writing to Whitney Bennett and will marry on June 3, 2000. Dawn says he is in charge of the boy grandchildren!!!

Robert moved with Pan Am from Dulles International Airport to the National Airport to be closer in to Washington DC. He then got an offer from Delta Airlines in 1991 when Delta took over some of the Pan Am operations. It was the best offer for a number of years, and he loves the company and their treatment of employees. Kathy moved from IRS Houston District Office to the National Office in 1987. Retirement is not too far off! It seems only yesterday that she went to work for the Government in Pearl City and was the "baby"! August 6, 2003 is freedom day when she makes her 30 years.
