| Mingo Junction (2000 pop. 3,631) is a small steel town located along the Ohio River in East Central Ohio immediately south of Steubenville and 20 miles north of Wheeling, WV. Steel is still king in Mingo Junction, as you can see by the picture to the right. Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel has a large plant downtown. The Deerhunter, staring Robert DeNiro and winner of the 1978 Acadamy Award for Best Picture of the Year, was partially filmed in Mingo Junction, as was the the 1984 film Reckless. Mingo is also the home of Rob Parise of the band Wild Cherry who had the number two song of the year 1976, "Play that Funky Music". Being an alumnus of Ohio State University, I also find it necessary to point out that Woody Hayes had his first coaching job at Mingo High School. |
