| In 1938 Heinkel received a development contract from the R.L.M for its project P.1041 which evolved to an official specification for a long-range heavy bomber. The specification called for anti-shipping and divebombing capabilities as well as level flight heavy bombing, and this proved to be one of the major factors in the failure of the P.1041 project. The Heinkel He-177 suffered heavily from engine problems. The engines often spontaneously caught fire in flight due to the friction that occured thru the coupling of the two DB-603G engines, and it didn't take long before the nickname "Reichs Feuerzeug" was given to the aircraft. |
