When Gareth Gates turned from a shy schoolboy with a stammer to a smooth-voiced pop star right before our very eyes on Pop Idol, it was obvious to everyone who voted for him that this special talent was here to stay. But being in the limelight at just 18 has its downs as well as ups. Constant recording, promoting and touring to keep him topping the charts takes its toll. And when Gareth decided to wind down with a bit of drinking, clubbing and womanising, the press were quick to dub him the 'wild man of pop'. OK! grabbed an exclusive chat with Gareth to find out the real story... You're famous for singing a lot of love songs. What does love mean to you? My perception of love isn't deep because I haven't had many experiences. I have had some experiences, but I don't think I've ever fallen in love. Let's say that if I were to fall in love, the ideal would be to find a girl, someone I'd feel so strongly about that I couldn't leave her for a single minute- somebody with whom I'd feel totally happy. So what does this perfect girl of yours look like? Madonna? Britney? No, I've never fantasised about an artist. Except Rachel from S Club when I was younger! But not at the point of becoming obsessed. I'm still looking for the ideal woman. There were some pictures taken of you where you appear to have tattoos on your arms. Is that your rebellious side coming out? No, these are fakes. They were drawn especially for a photo-shoot. I could never get that done- I have no tattoos, no piercings, nothing. But it's not because I'm afraid the needles would hurt! Do you think of yourself as a man of a boy now? [Laughs]I'm a man! So, as an artist and a man, what do you really like in life? Girls! Yeah girls! I would like to know them all. I love to hear them shout, it's quite bad for my ears, but so much fun and very good for your mood. And music. I can't spend a day without my music. As soon as I have a free moment, I take out my guitar and play. I also like to go to the cinema quite a lot. But my greatest passion is eating. Everybody says the sentence I say most is: 'I'm hungry.' I eat all the time! And what don't you like? Waking up early in the morning. I'm really a late bird. I love going out to nightclubs. To chat up girls? I've never really been on the pull. I have three sisters, so I've always known about girls and respect them. I've always loved girls- I liked looking at them. For me, they were princesses, I had a girlfriend when I was very young. |
