Using the Key Cover in the Classroom

The following is a very simple and easy to implement method of helping your students to independently achieve

higher typing speeds with minimal teacher supervision.  By using the Key Cover and this method your students

WILL be motivated , WILL learn to Touch-type and WILL improve their typing speed/accuracy.

This simple system is Teacher-Tested and is designed to get your students up and running with an independent

individualized typing program that takes very few minutes of class time.

The Independent Student Keyboarding System

1) Teacher gives initial input of proper keyboarding/touch-typing techniques, drills, importance of touch-typing, etc.

2) Students are introduced to typing training software such as 'CUSTOM TYPING TRAINING or GS TYPING TUTOR'.

Custom Typing Training is an excellent 'online' training site several of our students have used, where you can also test your

speed and request a certificate. There is a free trial period available.

GS Typing Tutor is also a very good downloadable program that many of our students use, there is a downloadable trial

    version.

If your students don't have any software we recommend they use one of the demo/trial versions mentioned above.  This

will enable you to get your class typing program running immediately.

3) Initially give students 10min/day of in-class typing practice so that you can ensure they are using the typing

    lessons (drills) properly.

4) Give the students a weekly supervised typing test, either one from the software or one prepared by the teacher.

Most typing tutor programs allow the user to import their own typing tests (TXT files) very

easily.  This is a chance for the teacher to do some cross-curricular integration.  For example, current readings

from other subject areas can be used.

5) Make the students use the Key Cover to cover their keyboard when doing the tests.  After you enforce this

the first time you will see initial frustration with some students as the reality hits them that they are unable to

'PEEK' at the keyboard.  Soon you will see motivation take hold and the students will be determined to

improve their Touch-Typing. As long as they know that their tests will be done with a covered keyboard they

will start touch-typing properly. It's AMAZING and it WORKS!

6) Have the students record their weekly test results on a classroom Bulletin Board display showing the continued

    improvement of the entire class.

ENJOY AND HAVE FUN...WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING OF YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THIS.
