This experiment reveals that blood glucose spikes can be blunted by addition of low glycemic food. Those who have normal fasting but high after food values should reduce their high GI foods like bread and rice. Instead they should add more low GI foods like pulses Kidney beans, Chick peas, (Horse gram - Chana dal), vegetables, certain fruits and lean meat and other protein sources. It is emphasized that the calorie limits should be respected as there is a danger of exceeding the calorie limits if only GI is considered.

Calorie for calorie multiple small meals produce less blood glucose elevation than a large meal.
So one should eat three to five small meals, but should refrain from frequent snacking in between as there is the danger of exceeding the Calorie recommendation.

There is a GI, GL list published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, July 2002 (5-56). GI of 70 or more is high, 56 t0 69 is medium and of 55 or less is low. A GL of 20 or more is high, 11 to 19 is medium and 10 or less is low. This list unfortunately contains only a few items normally consumed by Indians and even less by Kuwaitis. This situation can be changed with research to identify and develop low GI, GL foods which are in keeping with the culinary habits in Kuwait. The advantage of following food habits based on theses principles is that the diabetics and the family can eat the same healthy and palatable food. This not only leads to better control of diabetics but also helps in preventing diabetes in family members who are at risk of developing diabetes. To be able to eat the same food with the rest of the family is probably the best way to improve compliance in diabetics.

Conclusion: The
A, B, C of Medical Nutrition Therapy are
A for Amount. Calculate the Calorie requirement based on BMR, activity and BMI.
B for Balance. Carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins , minerals and other requirements as per RDA
C for Combine and Compensate. When a medium or high GL food is eaten, it should be combined with a low GL food so that the blood glucose elevation is reduced.
The food can be varied and different each day if the principle of food exchange is followed.
