Otaku Nakomako

L5R's Nakomako

Nakomako is an impulsive young Battle Maiden. She has studied well in her school, and is currently at Rank 3. She is well-skilled in horsemanship, archery, and kenjutsu. Her most prized possesion is Kemuri, her warhorse stallion. She also highly values a crystal tanto she recieved as a gift from Hida Murasama. She is somewhat vain about her appearance, especially her hair.

Nakomako was born roughly 18 years ago to Otaku Runako and Otaku Kuramuo. Runako was a Battle Maiden, like her mother before her, and her mother before her. She is a descendant of Otaku Kunamiko, and so, Nakomako claims Kunamiko as an ancestor, as well, finding herself able to perform tricks when riding that even other Otaku find difficult. Kuramuo was a stable hand in the Otaku stables, second only to the Stable Master himself, and had a way of calming even the most wild of horses. He was an excellent rider as well, though he never sat on the back of any of the warsteeds. Runako was 41 before she gave birth to Nakomako, the oldest of her three children. Nakomako's sister, Asameko, is 16 and has just completed her own gampukku from the Battle Maiden school. Their brother, Kuranaki, is 12, and doesn't show much interest in the Otaku's horses. He has been training at the local Shinjo Bushi school.

Nakomako is a slim, fit young lady. She must stay in shape if she is to be a capable fighter, and all the time spent on horseback has given her rather shapely thighs. When dressed for comfort, Nakomako generally wears an average quality kimono in the style for men. For formal occasions, Nakomako has a fine silk kimono, long and flowing, in shades of purple, black, and silver. It is decorated with a stylized horse motif. When wearing either kimono, Nakomako will always carry her Katana and Wakizashi (except while she is inside another's home, of course) and her Tessen, or warfan. For battle, Nakomako has light armor and a helm. She carries her swords, and has two bows for use either on the ground or while mounted. She also has a crystal Tanto that was a gift from a dear friend that she tries to carry on herself at all times. Nakomako almost always wears her hair up in some fasion, sometimes all of it wound in an efficient bun, sometimes elaborately braided. When she does let her hair down, it reaches to her hips. Nakomako inherited her father's mark of the Gaijin, and has bright green eyes.

Nakomako is seldom far from her cherished steed, Kemuri. His name means "smoke," and that is precisely the color of his coat. As an Otaku Warhorse, Kemuri resembles our Arabian horses, and stands 15.3 hands high. His is seven years old, still young and a bit rambunctious, and all the testosterone coursing through his veins doesn't help much, either. He's a beautiful dappled grey, his mane and tail a dark pewter while his hide blends from a soft silver to nearly white. Nakomako treasures Kemuri above any other possession, and will look to his wounds before tending her own. She has even been known to pass up a room at an inn to sleep with Kemuri in the stables. For everyday travel, Kemuri wears tack which is decorated with purple and black tassles, and accented with silver buckles. For battle, Kemuri has light barding to protect him.

Over the past year, Nakomako has had the opportunity to travel and meet new people. She's made friends with many people, but has become closest with her traveling partners Hida Haikkaziku, Hida Murasama, Togashi Detsume, Miruoto Tamida, and Isawa Kayemiko. They all spent some time on the wall together, and survived an encounter in the Shadowlands, as well as winning a tournament. Kayemiko is a sweet young Phoenix Shugenja that Nakomako trusts with her deepest secret: her love for Murasama. Murasama is a Crab Samurai, much older than Nakomako, who lost his previous family to treachery. The two have fallen deeply in love, and Murasama has sworn to send to the Otaku to ask for her hand in marriage. What most don't know, however, is that young Nakomako is no longer a maiden in the true sense of the word. If it were to get out what she and Murasama had done, repeatedly, great dishonor would befall both their families.

Nakomako has formed her own opinions of the major clans and Ronin based upon her exposure to them. Crabs, of course, are coarse and often rude, but they are loveable despite all that. And they're good for a laugh, most of the time. The Crane, though they are well-thought of among her clan, she does not much like. The Crane she has encountered have not been especially cordial, and so she refuses to give them more than obligatory respect. Two of her traveling companions are of the Dragon clan, and so she will approach any Dragons she meets with a welcome manner. Her two companions are sometimes annoying, especially the tatooed monk, but they have proven themselves to be valuable allies. As for the Lion, she has never much liked them. She's always been told that they are both jealous and afraid of the Unicorn clan, and so despise them. Until recently, she believed this to be true of every Lion, and distrusted them immensely. However, a member of the Lion clan joined their party for a short time, and she found that he could be trusted. However, he was a bit head-strong and impulsive, and she feels the party is actually better off without him. Her closest friend is a Phoenix, and so Nakomako thinks highly of the clan. Kayemiko is a kind and caring soul, and Nakomako has not seen any reason to think the rest of her clan would be otherwise. As for Scorpions, well, they are evil, deceitful, and will deal you treachery at every opportunity. Contrary to the society, Nakomako does not think too poorly of Ronin. While the Ronin she has met have either been annoying and idiotic or so full of themselves that they get in the way sometimes, she can identify somewhat with their outcast plight. She will willingly befriend and accompany a Ronin so long as he can prove his worth. On her travels, Nakomako has once encountered what she believes to be a Naga. The girl intrigued her, and Nakomako wishes to learn more about these supposedly-sleeping Ancients.
