DP draft STATS part I: Age
I performed some analyses on the Sunday draft picks to attempt to see some useless trends. This will be part I, which will discuss age of drafted celebrities. I calculated the average age and standard deviation of each member's roster. The results are laid out below, going from youngest to oldest in the format of 'team name' - avg. age (std.dev)
1. Wang - 60 (25)
2. Chunk - 69 (18)
3. Frump - 71 (20)
4. Train - 76 (13)
5. Ottawa - 79 (10)
6. Bob - 81 (10)
Incredibly, Wang's team is 21 years younger on average than Bob's. This is a large gap! Noticing Wang's standard deviation of 25, we can tell that Wang made some more extreme choices than the more conservative choices of Ottawa and Bob who each had a std. dev. of 10. The young group of Kiera Knightly, Amy Winehouse, and Jack Black all come in under the age of 40. While Ottawa and Bob stayed well above the 40 mark with all of their choices. Actually, they only had 3 choices under the age of 70 combined.
Maybe this data suggests different strategies from the drafters. Was Wang going for risky big points picks, while Bob and Ottawa were using the more conservative strategy of picking higher probability deaths? Well, hold on. Not so fast. Wang book-ended his picks by also choosing the oldest drafted celebrity of Claude Levi-Strauss at the tender age of 99. Maybe Wang is trying to get a guaranteed couple points to get on the board and then hoping for a lucky break with a long shot coming through.
Also of note while looking at ages of celebrities drafted is that Bob has 9 of 12 (75%) in the over 80 category. Wang has a mere 2 of 12 (17%). Quite a difference. Which team should we be more afraid of? Which strategy will pay off?
We won't know until Oct. 5, 2009.
