The Genius of the young mind: August 2, 2007
I had a family get together a few days ago at a lake. Of course, I brought along the washoo boxes. I didn't organize a tournament or even have trumpets announce their arrival. I merely put them out on the ground. It's amazing the drawing power of Washoos. My uncle was sucked in by their tractor beam. "What's this?" he asked. My Dad got up to show him how to play and they had a game. My uncle then showed his son and they played. So goes the game of Washoos.
What was most interesting was when the kids got out of the lake and were looking for something else to do. They tried the Washoos but of course couldn't come close to getting the washers in the box at 17 feet. Within 30 seconds these little geniuses had figured out that if they move the boxes closer (about 8 feet for them) that they could have some success. They cooperatively took turns with the washers and spent about 10 minutes (pretty long for kids with a 5 second attention span) making throws and cheering each others hits.
The future of washoos in the next generation seems secure.
