The Michigan Air Hockey Association (MAHA) was founded in the summer of 2003 by cousins Kevin and Jason Rich. Kevin and Jason were no strangers to the realm of Air Hockey, playing the sport since their early childhood days. In the summer of 2001, Kevin and Jason went to Las Vegas and played Air Hockey at every hotel that they hit on the Las Vegas Strip. They even made up their own Air Hockey Organization known as the KJAHA (Kevin and Jason Air Hockey Association). On this trip, the cousins learned of the Air Hockey Nationals and the United States Air hockey Association (USAA). From there on in Kevin and Jason had the goal of one day competing in a national and/or state tournament and creating a fan base of Air Hockey players back home in the state of Michigan. Two years later during the summer of 2003, the two cousins decided to attend their first ever Air Hockey tournament by attending the "Windy City Puck Off" the name given to the Illinois State Championship Tournament. There the cousins met many of the pros who taught them valuable skills to help improve their games. The Michigan boys proved to be successful at the tournament as Jason took home 17th place and Kevin 19th place out of the 36 or so players that attended the tournament. On arrival back home, the Michigan Air Hockey Association (MAHA) was born. With it's birth, Kevin and Jason made it their personal mission to generate a following in the MAHA and spark the interest of many players in the state of Michigan. Currently, many states including California, Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New York, and Indiana (to just name a few) have become hot spots for Air Hockey. These states have Air Hockey organizations, like the MAHA, and hold weekly tournaments to determine the rankings of their players. Air Hockey is becoming the fastest growing sport in the United States as players are ranked in the USAA world rankings and travel around the United States playing in State and National Tournaments. The MAHA has set out to gain the success that such organizations in other states have had. The MAHA is ready to put Michigan on the map as a hot spot for AIR HOCKEY! |
