Lyric poems are short

They express speakers thoughts

Expresses a speakers emotions

 

*Lyric poems do not have to rhyme or have a rhyme scheme

 

 

Narrative

 

1 tells a story

2 is longer than nor,al poetry

3 has one or more characters

4 has a setting , conflict , series of events that leads to climax and conclusion

5. lines divided into stanzas

 

this will have a series of events like rising action climax and closing action

 

Dramatic Poetry

 

1. One or more characters speak.

 

One or more speakers tell directly what is happening

 

Creates illusion that the reader is witnessing a dramitic event.  (your there)

 

Words of the speaker are often but not always in quotation marks.

 

Look for :

            I or You

 

General

Aliteration – a general sound of words the (s sound in the race poem)

Onomatopeia – when a word sound like it pronuciation ( buzz, ripped,mj

            Shakespearean Sonnet

 

Must Have

-         14 lines

-         Rhyme Scheme ABAB CD CD EFEF GG

-         Iambic Pentameter  10sylables = 5 feet Iambic       soft loud

-         1st quatrain – Presents a problem

-         2nd quatrain –

-         3rd quatrain – Provides a solution

-         Couplet – Reverse the Solution 

 

 

Petrarchan Sonnet

            Italian

-Complaints that he was suffering for love

courtly love

 

-is 14 lines

-         iambic pentameter  10 sylable with 5 feet

-          Rhme scheme ABBA ABBA CDE CDE

8 lines               6 lines

Metaphor- a direct comparison between two dissimilar objects

Simile- like/as

Personification- giving inanimate objects human characteristics
