In the movie the Shaw Shank Redemption an old man Brooks makes bail after living in prison for over 70 years. He is now forced to live in an unknown world that he is out of touch with as an eighty-year-old man. His only friends were in prison; Andy and Red were particularly close to Brooks. He sarcastically contemplated robbing a drug store to go back to prison. After much thought and time he decides that the only way to continue in life is to not continue.  He then rights a letter to his good friends in prison mainly Andy and Red telling them of his decision to kill himself. It is after reading of Brooks’ own hanging that Andy and Red realize how important it is for them to stay together and to remain friends even after they’re lonely old live in prison. Later on in the story the two meet outside of prison on the coast of Mexico.
