19: Journal #3: On the internet, briefly research life inside the
trenches; evaluate what type of life these soldiers lived.
Life
in the trenches was certainly not a luxurious life and not even a half decent
one. In fact it was a living nightmare, you would be on the front lines
battling for your life hoping that you yourself would not be hit and injured or
even killed. The soldiers on the front line were fighting with little food and when
they received food it wasn’t very good food at that. The only time that they
would receive food was if the battle was at a low or at a pause, which allowed
for supplies to be delivered. If they were in the heat of battle then they
would be receiving no food. Sleep was a rarity in the trenches as it came in
short time frames, as you would either be woken by a rat or by gunfire. Puddles
would also collect in the trenches and be the cause of a horrible disease
called trench foot, this disease would cause the foot to swell up two to three
times its normal size. If you were a victim to this disease your feet would
often be amputated. The soldiers also had to deal with the rain, which would
make the trenches wet and muddy, rats also brought trouble, as they would eat
the soldier’s food.
