Ch. 5 & Ch. 6 Review In-class Questions
1. Irony (p.75): “Killing each separate louse…Crack! And they’re done for.”
- The irony is that the lice are so smalll and yet the military has trouble
stopping them yet they have the ability to take over countries.
2. Themes (p.86-88): “But what will really happen when we go back?”…We believe
in such things no longer, we believe in the war.”
- The Destructiveness of War: The bombs fired made it so they could not do any
activities and they could no longer strive. Then it bursts their hearts
and they don’t believe in such things but they only believe in war.
- The Lost Generation: After two years oon shells and bombs, the war has ruin
their generation to the point to where they are too young and they don’t want
to take the world by storm and they are fleeing from their life.
3. Irony and foreshadowing (p.99-100): “There are rumors of an
offensive…tonight two of out men are wounded by them.”
- The irony is that they are passing theeir own graves and they know it.
- The foreshadowing is when the got to ffight, they ran into coffins that still
smelled of resin, and of the forest. They figure that there are 100
coffins and they figure at least 100 men will die.
4. Irony and understatement (p.103-104)
- The irony is that the men will be killled themselves for using a bayonet or
even having it, when they are being used in war against them.
- Understatement is that the guys are ussing shovels to kill people because its
easier and the bayonets get stuck in the bellies.
5. Atmosphere and irony (p.108-114): “The night is unbearable…they did not
count on so much resistance.”
- The atmosphere here is dark, some exciitement, no one can sleep, but only
stare ahead and dose, and they’re all hungry.
- All the soldiers are cool and calm loooking but on the inside they are
freaking out and going insane.
