| Okay here we go. I'm writing this review a little drunk, but perhaps that's a good thing. We here at "Quick and Dirty.." try to remain as honest as possible. A little Guiness helps a lot. Here we go. This movie bombed in the box office. Let's ignore that. We're talking movies here, not damn ticket sales. I heard a lot of bitching and moaning about this movie when it came out from comic book friends (you know who you are) who bascially trashed the use of CGI. Here's what I have to say to that, now that I've finally seen the flick: It's actually pretty darn good! There are two instances in The Fellowship of the Ring that were worse to be quite honest. This is the Hulk on the big screen. A bodybuilder painted green is not going to cut it. And animatronics or puppets would never be able to do what the Hulk is supposed to do. He's supposed to be gigantic. Anyone who says he was too big has never picked up a Hulk comic in their life. Considering what they had to do with the character the CGI was very good. The ultimate test for CG is close-ups and full daylight. I think they passed with flying colours on this one. I also heard some complaints about the length of the movie. That it tended to drag out. Well my friends, The Hulk is more or less what a comic book movie should be. Too many superhero movies gloss over the origin story in order to get to the action. The patient reader goes through a few issues while the origin takes place and the hero deals with new powers and (inevitably) new enimies. Just because we don't see the Hulk smashing things up within the first half hour doesn't make this a bad flick. In fact, it keeps the focus on the characters. I loved watching the story unfold. This movie was the first issue, the origin story. But ticket sales being what they were, I doubt we'll see a second issue. The Acting: Okay, first let me say this. Kudos to Eric Bana for remaining a nerd. Not once did Bruce Banner turn into a "cool" nerd like too many other Hollywood comic book heros. But his acting, well, lacked a fair bit , as did many in the cast. Except Jennifer Connelly. Yes I'm biased. I've been in love with her since Labyrinth... (SPOILER ALERT!!!! FIRE IN CRYOGENTIC COMPARTMENT!!!) The Ending: Terrible, terrible, terrible. And I'm not talking about the slightly cheesy Latin American Prologue. I'm talking about the terrible final talk and fight to the death between Bruce and his estranged father (Nick Nolte). It could have been so much better. What a waste of special effects. Watch the movie and you'll see what I mean. Plot Holes: Yes, the scipt isn't perfect..there are many questions left unanswered and relationships that don't get the screen time that they deserve. Why doesn't Bruce ever call his Mother? Is she dead or something? Why does David want Betty dead? What ever happened to the doctor whose life Bruce saved? (note: I see the posiblility for a sequel in that alone...whose to say that the doc wasn't affected in some way by the gamma waves that may have gotten through Bruce?) well, being a little drunk is making me fall asleep, so I'll try to wrap this up. The Hulk for me was a guilty pleasure. I knew that what I was watching wasn't a masterpiece....but I loved it anyway. I cheered when Hulk threw the tank. I really did. Maybe it's my own wish to be a little bigger, the desire to at least once seem a little intimidating that really made me like this movie. Bruce was a nerd and got to kick some major ass. Any underdog will enjoy wayching that. This movie is like Starship Troopers. Turn your brain off for a little while and you'll have a blast. The Hulk Gets: 3 1/2 out of 5 p.s. thehulk.com is a very neat website.LOTS of stuff.. |
