| Henry Selick, director of such greats as The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and the Giant Peach, has dropped a huge bomb with this one. My God. i wanted to see this movie when it came out a few years ago. The stop motion animation looked really cool and i could get past stupid humour if the movie looked cool. Yah. I'm shallow like that sometimes. Well, the long and short of it was that i didn't see it, nor did I rent it. Fast forward a few years. I discover the DVD lying in a 6.88 bin at Wal-Mart. I've never been afraid of a blind buy, especially if it's really cheap. And i usually have a good idea before hand if i'll like the move (see: Ameile...Don't Look Back..etc.). Boy was I WRONG!!! This movie is awful. The design is pretty neat. A very cartoonish Tim burton style, obviously drawing from the comic book from which it was based ( a graphic novel called Darktown)and from the director's work on Nightmare. But there is not enough of it to save the movie. What this movie needed was more Monkey and less Bone. The real world scenes were pretty bad and why the hell is Cris Kattan on the poster when he's only in the movie for the last 20 minutes...albeit he was my favourite part ( and i normally hate the guy). It took me three sittings to watch this movie from beginning to end, and i even fastforwarded a section because the agony was too great. Mostly it was the terrible script that ruined this movie. (there are three writers listed...so maybe that has something to do with it)I haven't read the graphic novel, but I would be interested in seeing if there was any corrolation between the two. The story started too fast. It jumps right in. It leaves you feeling as if you've missed something. The subcoma world of Darktown is much more interesting than the real world and the real world tends to get more attention. Anyway, I can't waste any more time writing a review of this thing. I would rather eat old moldy Jell-o than watch this move again...bleh. You'll notice I didn't mention Brendan Fraser...well...he did what he was told, can't blame the guy for that. This movie get's a whopping: 2 out of 5 (the 2 is for the design only...) |
