Crazee happenings During the recording...
ok, ok....recording this album was nuts. Steve and I kept getting sidetracked and looking at games on Sarah's computer. Also making trips to get coffee or to pick up our friend Jeff Greene. Here's a little info on the recording space: Sarah's computer was located on a desk at the foot of her bed (in her bedroom of course). God bless her she didn't mind late night recording sessions at all. Getting all the gear arranged was a bit of a fuss to get the right sound and we found that the only way to TRUELY get the right sound on the mic was to position the small mic stand on a box containing a Harry Potter action figure (Hargid to be percise). For some reason, the sound was always better when we used the box. This meant that I was sitting on the floor for the recording and some nights I would try to stand up but my legs had fallen asleep. Ah, how one suffers for ones art!
THE SPACE
THE DOG
some of the funniest moments during recording happened when Sarah's dog, Bandit, would wander into the room. She had had sugery and had a cone on her head (which is funny in itself...). While we were recording the sound of the cone hitting off of things would occasionally get recorded. Of course this would set me into a fit of giggling, which is another story in itself...
TAKE 115 !!
Some songs really took their toll on us. Peter the Floating Head and The Bus, for instance, took take after take after take. It got to a point where I couldn't even get to the end of the song without giggling. Not to mention my notorious habit of forgetting the words to my own songs. Steve actually typed up the words to The Bus so i wouldn't forget them while recording...
THE FOOLHEARTY JEFF GREENE!!
local musician (and good buddy) Jeff Greene came over a lot to offer an extra set of ears (and hang out of course). one night we were looking for rain sounds on the net to put at the beginning of the album so Jeff grabs the mic and sticks it out the window. It was raining that night and we got great sound of a car passing on the road and everything. At the time we didn't realize what Jeff was doing....now that was crazee, man, crazee!
THE GUITAR TRAGEDY
Two days before we were to start recording the album, DISASTER STRUCK!! Having taken my guitar Maggy (a nice little Jay Turser Classical) out on the road with the boys, we stopped at Needs to get some grub. I was in the front seat and left my guitar there. The next morning when I took it out of it's case to play it ( I hadn't taken it out that night) I discovered that the neck had been snapped! Apparently when my buddy Andy had pushed the seat forwards to get out, it must have broken the neck and no one noticed. In a panic I called another bud, Chuck, whom to I had sold my old guitar Angie (a Yamaha Classical). with Angie in hand I was able to record the album. And with a broken classical it was the perfect oppurtunity (excuse) to give in and finally buy an acoustic: a great sounding Montana.
