The stars are below us
by Kevin McFadden
The stars are below us.
Disbelief suspended in air,
of was it time that left us floating here?
Stars in your eyes,
flecks of color in radiant spirals,
tunnels at the ends of which there is no light,
but beautiful darkness.
Stars of the city lights
spread about like cigarette ashes
flicked and dancing into the night.
Stars with the burden of wishes,
all the winning lottery numbers
spelled out, if you know how to read 'em.
And in the atmosphere are we.
If I can just suspend here,
quiet my inertia from the fall,
the heat of which so searing that
my skin changes texture and color,
this change unalterable.
But please, don't fear.
Just look.
The stars are below us.
Let's reach down and touch one.
