| How can one criticize the sublime? This gig was easily one of the highlights of a moribund NYC summer - I mean, how many other shows in the boring scene here lately can compare to the combined efforts of Rocket From the Tombs - which features key members of the Dead Boys, Pere Ubu and Television all jamming on the same stage? It's a damn good question! The Village Underground was packed to the hilt; this being totally understandable considering the personalities on the stage and the quality and sheer intensity of their music. One of the high points of the evening was Cheetah's vocals on the classic Rocket's (and Dead Boys) tune Ain't It Fun, which was performed with enough emotion to break one's heart. This is not to say the vocal prowess of Rockets' lead singer Thomas is anything to ignore; despite having to grab a lyric sheet from behind his back occasionally, he was nonetheless a very captivating frontman. The guitar playing of Richard Lloyd of Television fame and Craig from Pere Ubu was also charged with the excitement which was ever present that night, often they switched bass for guitar depending on the song. Drumming for the band was another member of the band Pere Ubu and he did a fantastic job handling the sticks on alot of classic material. |
