Alta E MURCHISON

Publish Date: Tuesday, April 2, 2002 ALTA E. JAMES FORT FAIRFIELD - Alta E. James, 89, died March 31, 2002, at a Presque Isle hospital. She was born Oct. 11, 1912, in Aroostook Junction, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Hugh C. Murchison Sr. and Ethel (Amsden) Murchison. Alta grew up in the Fort Fairfield area, where she attended local schools. She loved to shop and was known by all the sales clerks in the area stores. Alta enjoyed people, especially larger crowds. She is survived by a brother, Hugh Murchison Jr. of Fort Fairfield, several nieces and nephews. She will also be fondly remembered by a special friend, Cora Stewart of Fort Fairfield. In addition to her parents, Alta was predeceased by both her husbands, Gordon Mason and Clarence W. James; a son, Richard J. Mason; two brothers, Coleman Murchison and William Murchison; and a sister, Myrtle Wilson. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. A spring interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery. Donations in memory of Mrs. James may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division Inc., One Main Street, Suite 300, Topsham 04086. Arrangements in care of Dorsey Funeral Home.


John Ellsworth NEWCOMB

John Ellsworth NEWCOMB was born 17 Dec 1878 (one census says 8 Dec 1878) at Grand Falls, Victoria County, New Brunswick. He was the son of William NEWCOMB and Morinda/Mirendy HARTT, their sixth child. At age 23, John Ellsworth NEWCOMB entered the U.S. on the CPR train, arriving at Fort Fairfield, Maine on or about the 15th of August, 1901, according to his application for citizenship. He married, in New Brunswick, prior to that date, Carrie MARSHALL, the daughter of Jonathan and Mahala MARSHALL. John and Carrie (MARSHALL) NEWCOMB had three children - 1) Hazel Violet NEWCOMB, born 2 Feb 1904 in Westfield, Maine (She married Mr. LAPLANTE, late in life and had no children ; 2) Harold Ralph NEWCOMB, born 18 Nov 1907 (who had Harold Ralph, Jr. ; Linda, and JoAnn NEWCOMB) and 3) Dorothy Amelia NEWCOMB, born 21 June 1912 at Westfield, Maine.
