Cpl Bengamin HITCHCOCK

BIOGRAPHY: Benjamin Hitchcock, Cpl. age 25, joined 20th February 1814, a deserter from the 36th Regiment of Foot, born Bridgenorth, Shropshire, a labourer by trade. He was descibed as almost 5ft 9ins, light brown hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion and slender. ================================================================= Arrived in New Brunswick as a Royal West india Ranger Grantees of Kent Parish 1822 STATE OF THE MILITARY SETTLEMENT IN THE PARISH OF KENT ON THE RIVER SAINT JOHN - JULY 1822 In 1822 the Parish of Kent was in York County and its upper boundary was not well defined. It later became part of Carleton County. By 1851 some of the families listed in the following table can be found as far north as Perth Parish, Victoria County, so it would be wise to check all three counties for additional records. CBB The actual state of the Military Settlement in the Parish of Kent, on the River Saint John. He may have been the Benjamin of Richard and Mary Hitchcock who was baptised at Stottesden (Shropshire) on May 31, 1789 (Stottesden is only 7 miles from Bridgenorth). BIOGRAPHY: As a youth Benjamin H. enlisted in the Royal Candigan Militia which in 1812 was stationed in Limerick, Ireland. 28 Jun 1812 , as a Private, he transferred to 6 Co., 2nd Bn, 36th Regiment of Foot stationed at Blankington, Sussex, England. Deserted 24 Aug. No record of military service for next 18 months. One might assume that he spent part of, not all in prison for deserting. Either 15 or 20 Feb 1814 Private Benjamin H. transferred from 36th Regiment to the Royal West India Rangers. Feb 1814 - Jun 1815 Trinidad. Then til Mar 1816 Guadaloupe at least part of the time as member of Captain Jack's 1st Rifle Co. From then until transfer to 8 Co. he was at St. Lucia. Mar - Jun 1817 St. Vincent. Regiment then moved to St. Kitt's where 25 Jul 1818 he was promoted to Corporal. June 1819 Regiment was transported to St. John, New Brunswick arriving 10 Jun aboard the "Buerdon", "Aleona" and "Staar" under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Lavicourt. Regiment was disbanded. Those content to settle on the St. John River, Benjamin among them, were allotted lands, farming implements, a proportion of seed and three years provisions. At this time Benjamin had a wife and one child. Two years later in 1821 when "The McLaughlin Report" outlined the conditions on these newly settled lands there were very few settlers occupying the lands. Benjamin and his family were not on their land at that time and where they where remains a mystery. The area settled by these soldiers was called Ranger Settlement above Tilley near present day Medford. BIRTH: 31 May 1789 Stottesdon and Farlow Parish, Shropshire, England BIRTH: Stottesdon was only 7 miles from Bridgnorth, the birthplace that Benjamin shows in the RWIR Description Book. Farlow was a smaller place just a little farther from Bridgnorth that apparently shared its parish records with Stottesdon
