Walter became a fireman on one of his father's ships at age 17. From there he worked his way up to chief engineer. He was the first man in California to hold both an engineer's and a captain's license. In 1909 he established the Pacific Freight and Transportation Company and the Rideout Transportation Company. He served as President in both companies and eventually headed the largest trans-bay freighting company in Alameda County, California
Norman went to California at the time of the Gold Rush. Started a store in Captainville, California with his brother Benjamin. After his death, his wife administered his estates with great skill. She sold a chain of banks to the Bank of Italy.
