Hi! Kevin,
Jane Murchison, New Brunswick, Canada, b.1812. m.Aug 3,1847
My gggrandmother was Jane Murchison daughter of Alexander Murchison
and Barbara (Barbary) McR itchie from Inverness Scotland in 1804.Jane
married James Hitchcock the eldest son of Benjami n Hitchcock and
Cecelia Collins. Benjamin was a corporal in the British West India
Rangers an d was among those who settled along the Upper Saint John
River near Grand Falls, in 1819, fol lowing the disbanding of his
regiment. Are you a descendant of this Murchison family?Hi, Kevin
Pleased to receive your message. In all my research on my
Hitchcock/Murchison side I had not discovered that James was Jane's
second husband ! This is a new element for me. Unfortunately I do not
have the date of James' birth only that it is believed to be around
1816 and that he was born in Ireland according to the Census of 1851.
Other searchers have not been able to locate a record of his birth or
christening either in Ireland , England or the West Indies where his
father Benjamin was posted before coming to Canada in 1819 with the West
Indian Rangers and settling along the St.John River below Grand Falls.
I have searched the Cemetery for his grave site at the Baptist Church in
Ortonville without success. I do know that he and Jane were among the
founders of that Church. Jane was a widow again in 1871 according to
the Census for that year. No grave site for her either.... . We
believe that she was born around 1812. I am intrigued by the fact that
James and Jane are registered in the Census of 1851 with a family of two
sons. James Walker Alexander (three years of age) my grgrand-father and
an adopted son John (one year) . Where were her other children the
Caugheys ? They were quite young at that time. I will certainly pay a
visit to the National Archives here in Ottawa to have another look at
the Grand Falls region at that time. Sorry that I cannot be of more
help. There is a family reunion of the
Hitchcock/Watson/Rideout/McLaughlin in the works for September of this
year. Another chance to discover more about the family. Thanks again
for your note. Will keep in touch.
