To: Kevin, Viettia, and Chris Some (in this case other) people have all the luck! This afternoon I discovered that two of you and Viettia's husband are all descendants of James and Olive Hartt. I have the feeling you haven't corresponded with each other even though I have written and heard from each of you. I found your names through (1) the Hart Family Forum >www.genforum.com<, (2) the Canadian GenWeb Project, New Brunswick, Victoria County GenWeb page >http://www.rootsweb.com/~mearoost/victoria/queries.html< and (3) Keith Hummel who listed himself as researching Hartts from NB through the Roots Surname List (RSL) at >http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi#search<. His e-mail is >[email protected]<. Proves it pays to keep looking in different places. I should be so lucky with my Hart (one t) family. I am still looking for information about my grandfather Michael Hart (b. 1849), son of Thomas, who came alone from Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. He supposedly came to Ontario (family legend didn't mention New Brunswick) at age 11 and then almost immediately immigrated to Washington, D.C. (in 1861). The obituary of his unmarried brother Thomas who died in New Orleans, LA in 1910, indicated that there were relatives in St. Andrews, Philadelphia, and Montana. I haven't found the ones in St. Andrews or Philadelphia, yet. My search started with a letter from a cousin Mary Hartt who, along with her five other siblings, were living in Kallispell, Flathead, Montana. Their obituaries indicated that they were the children of William and Ann Connolly Hartt of Grand Falls, New Brunswick. I learned this through the US GenWeb Project. That is what led me to searching New Brunswick records to see if I could find out more about William's family and how it connected to mine since "cousin" is a particularly ambiguous term. In particular I was hoping that someone had hosted an 11 year old nephew who would show up in the 1861Canadian census. NO LUCK for me there, since it hasn't been filmed by the LDS! In the course of this research I corresponded with the three of you, but I still haven't made any connection to your James Hartt! I have found that William Hartt is listed as "broh", just above Bridget Costigan (who appears to be a widow with her oldest son named John) in the 1851 census and Keith Hummel's John Hartt was married to Julia Costigan, daughter of a John Costigan (probably the widow's husband's father). It's not uncommon for a brother and a sister to marry a sister and brother. I don't know if the Costigan spouses are related and I haven't proved William's relationship to John Hartt, just that the surnames are the same. And as to my grandfather's relationship to William Hartt's family, I haven't found anything except the letter from Mary in 1910. I haven't been able to find the parents of William or of my great grandfather Thomas. My hope was that they were brothers and someone knew William's parents' names! Parish Church records that were filmed in Ballina have not turned up with either Thomas, William, or Michael, but they did have Keith's ancestor John Hartt and his wife Ann Cowfield. Like I said, some people have all the luck and this year it's not me. Anyway, I hope the three of you can share your information with each other and I'll back out of this since it doesn't appear to be my family at all! Kevin descends from James and Olive's son George and Mary Downing Hartt through their daughter Mary Olive. Viettia's husband descended from Mirenda (Morinda), daughter of James and Olive Hartt. Chris descends from George and Mary Downing Hartt through son Anthony (Antony). As you know, James was a Baptist so you wouldn't expect to find his family in the Catholic Church registers, but some of them are. I have rented the LDS film # 0859893, Parish records of Grand Falls de L' Assumption which begins in 1868. I found that George was baptized and married on May 26, 1887(page 220). George and his wife Mary Downey had a son Anthony - born or baptized on 17 Feb 1891(page 323). Fr. MA O'Keeffe baptized Mary Cecilia Rose Hartt on 26 May 1892. She was born on 29 April 1892 of the lawful marriage of John (yes, it says John) Hartt and Mary Downey. Sponsors were Alexander McCarthy and Mary McCarthy. Then I found the baptisms of George Alex. Hartt (page 9) [I didn't copy the date] and on Oct. 8, 1896 James Wallace Hartt (page 45), both sons of George and Mary. I think Margaret and John Underwood were George Alex.'s sponsors. I'll check the missing date and sponsors when I get back to the library, but it probably won't be until August. Now, could someone please find my Hart family? I'm going on vacation next week.
