| Principles of Mathematics Grade 10, Academic (Course Code: MPM 2D) As prescribed by the Ontario Ministry of Education and its Curriculum Prerequisite: Principles of Mathematics 9 (MPM 1D) - minimum of 75% Author of Course: Kevin Leung OME-Recommended Reference Texts: 1) MathPower 10 (Ontario Edition) - McGraw-Hill Ryerson 2) Math On Call: A Mathematics Handbook Course Outline: This Course enables students to broaden their comprehension of relations, extend their skills in multi-step problem solving, and continue to develop their abilities in abstract reasoning. Students will pursue investigations of quadratic functions, their applications and transformations; solve and apply linear systems; solve multi-step problems in analytic geometry to verify properties of geometric figures including triangles, rectangles, parallelograms and circles; investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles and the solution of acute triangles using the sine and cosine laws; and develop supporting algebraic skills, including factoring. Units of Study (Six in Total) Click on the chapter title to proceed to the course Introduction: Grade 9 Review This is not a chapter within the gr.10 curriculum, but is recommended as the introductory class for this course. Review: Linear systems, number systems, algebra skills. Chapter 1: Linear Systems Expectations: Determine the POI of two linear equations and interpret its context in a situation. Solve problems and systems by substitution and elimination. Chapter 2: Analytic Geometry Expectations: Determine the length and midpoint of a line segment. Determine the equation of a circle and identifying the radius. Solve multi-step problems, applying concepts of slope and the length and midpoint of line segments. Verify geometric properties of a figure. Determine the characteristics of a triangle whose vertex coordinates are given. Chapter 3: Quadratic Functions Expectations: Quadratic function in standard form and factored form. Determine the maximum or minimum value of a function. Determine the zeros and the max/min of such a function from its graph. Solve problems related to a real situation. Chapter 4: Quadratic Equations Expectations: Solve quadratic equations by factoring and quadratic formula. Sketch a quadratic function graph by locating x-intercepts. Determine the zeros of a quadratic function using algebra. Solve problems in a real situation. Chapter 5: Polynomials Expectations: Expand and simplify second-degree polynomial expressions. Factor such expressions involving common factors, differences of squares and trinomials. Chapter 6: Trigonometry Expectations: Similarity, congruence of triangles. Sine, Cosine and Tangent formulas and rules; and using them to determine measures and angles triangular sides. Solve problems involving measures of sides and angles in acute triangles. Conclusion: Evaluation & Preview of Gr.11 Math It is recommended that students are informed of what they will be learning in grade 11 math, be it personal finance, functions or functions and relations. |
