In the study of personality, one of the biggest areas of controversy is the nature-nurture debate,  "whether inherited bio characteristics or learned/environmental forces has more of an impact on personality development"

Nature

Genes: biological building blocks that determine a person's characteristics
- Found in chromosomes (46 in every cell; 23 given from each parent)

Nurture
- read page 83-85 and answer the following questions:

(1) What are some factors in the environment that play a role in personality development?


(2) How does the media influence personality? How does it affect our self-concept?


estrogen
: female sex hormone

- "This debate is important to politicians (policy-makers) and decision-makers as they allocate resources to society"

- read page 86 answer the following question:

(1) Give an example from the reading  to show that the statement above is true.

sexual orientation
- whether a person is attracted to a person of the same sex, opposite sex or both
identical twins
- identical genes
fraternal twins - have half the genes in common
