| Back to Index Based on The Human Way by Colin Bain and Jill Colyer 10.1 Aggression and Violence in Society The Problem - conflict (a state of opposition characterized by negative feelings that sometimes result in fights) is from the many differences in society - However, cohesion (harmony from resolution of problems) can also be achieved - Unresolved conflict leads to aggression and violence - such results in high financial costs and emotional scars/fear The Explanation: Three Perspectives on Agression & Violence Anthro: created by the culture in which an individual lives Socio: result of interaction in society - Definitions: Dehumanization, anonyhmity, diffusion of responsibility Other Factors Affecting Violence from city to city - Administration of social services - geographic settings of dwellings - some elements in our culture, such as competitive sports, produce sancationed violence (one that is excused without punishment) Psych: - Modelling theory: learning violence from those who behave similarly - Frustration-Aggression theory: if someone is prevented from achieving a goal, the agression that's built up leads to aggression. Discussion Preparation: Does Gun Control Laws Decrease Violence? Response by Kevin Leung I am in favour of gun control, although I believe that there is more to do than that to decrease violence. Indeed, gun laws can make the illegal purchase and location of weapons harder and legal ones safer. (to be updated) |
