The Wild and Wacky of Japan

The land of the rising sun. There are just some things I see in Japan that make me wonder if some people have been in the sun too long. Things that just make you go "huh?" Here are a few...

Ah, America Town. Land of 1,000 stereotypes. Here young Japanese kids live out the American dream.. very badly. Some dress as 50's greasers, some as 90's gangstas and some as cowboys who existed in no decade. Grafatti is everywhere.. but it's company sponsered to give it that ghetto look. Yuki took me here when I met her in Osaka. I wonder if she understood why I found the place so funny....

These are some of the buttons on the oddest toilet I have ever seen. It was in the Dazaifu Youth Hostle. It had a sink built into the top and a nearby phone. When I sat down it revved up and I was afraid to touch anything for fear that it would turn into the Batmobile or something. The funniest part is that I took multiple pictures of this toilet and for one of them I had to back into the hallway to get a good shot.. about 15 Japanese bystandrs got a kick out of that.

These were everywhere. When I first saw one I was happy. I like watching fish and we had a long wait at the airport. But on closer inspection I found that the fish were actually Computer Rendered artificial fish on an LCD scrren. The bubbles are from another pain of glass in front of the screen with some water in it. I can't imagine that these setups are cheap compared to real fish, and really, I think someone is missing the point.

Ever wonder what happened to Art Garfunkel? Me neither.

Not really wild or wacky, but just kinda odd to see a monk on a bus. It was even more surreal when his cell phone went off.

And we call ourselves an advanced civilization! We don't even have all night panty vending machines. Wew found this in Osaka next to some other machines selling equally tastefull goods.
