Japanese Language[6 Credits]

This is going to be my most important class.. And where better to take it?

ENGL 3030 Contemporary Japanese Literature[2 credits] (Mark Tiedemann)

This course will look at some novels, short fiction, and poetry of contemporary writers in Japan. Some broad themes and characteristics of Classical and Modern Japanese literature will be raised to see how these are or are not reflected by the works of writers in Japan today. Discussion will also touch on what these pieces show us about contemporary Japanese society.

HIST 3020 Japanese History[2 credits] (Fujiko Chamberlain)

This course will be based on reading in the history of Japan from its origin to the pre-modern period (to the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration). It will examine the significant developments of Japan's early agrarian society to feudalism secluded state under the centralized Tokugawa Government, and its transition from a semi-feudal structure to the modern state.

EDUC 3010 Overview of the Japanese Educational System [2 credits](Yamaguchi)

This course offers an introduction to understanding the Japanese educational system. First, we will make various comparisons between the American educational system and the Japanese one, in which, for example, the basic relationship between the teacher and the student will be dealt with, and we will be able to elucidate certain great differences between the two systems. Second, we will attempt to ascertain reasons for these differences by focusing on cultural and historical points of view. Some school visits will be prepared to give students a firsthand look at the facilities and classroom situations of schools at various levels of the educational system, and to allow students to meet with teachers, administrators, and students.

PHYED 2010 Seminar in Traditional Japanese Martial Arts and Sports [1 credit]

This seminar will focus mainly on karate and aikido. Other topics may include lectures on sumo (Japanese wrestling) and other arts as they relate to Japanese traditional culture and Japanese society as a whole.

ART 2010 Seminar in Traditional Japanese Fine Arts[1 credit]

This seminar will focus on the gentile arts of calligraphy, flower arrangement, and tea ceremony. Other topics may include the art of putting on a kimono and traditional Japanese dance.
