On top of the Tackiest Mountain in America

This morning was wonderful - we had the Trail to ourselves, the sun was out and the breeze kept us cool.  We passed lots of stunning views of Mt. Madison, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Adams and Mt. Clay on the way to Mt. Washington.  The only thing ruining the peace was the choo-chooing of the old cog train and the exhaust fumes from the auto road.  Lovely picture of wilderness, eh?

After being waved at by a passenger laden, rootin', tootin', pollutin' train, we made our way up the summit building on top of Washington.  Oh my goodness, it was bad.  From the mounds of people to the $2 hot dog, it's just not a great experience.  As I sit here in the summit building, I can smell the fumes from the coal-burning train now.  Gross.  Cough.  Gag.  Hack.  Ick.

[entry finished at Mizpah Spring Hut]

Instead of another tirade about my dislike of the AMC, I'll just write about my experience at our first full-service hut.  We had an easy hike off of Mt. Washington to here, Mizpah Spring Hut, with a nice stop at Lakes of the Clouds Hut.   We asked for work-for-stay here at Mizpah and, fortunately, got it.  I took a break for 15 minutes, but then it was time to set the tables.  Hi-ho, hi-ho, off to work I go.

After finishing up our chores, we had to hide out in the back while the paying customers got to eat lots of delicious, warm food.  Needless to say, it wasn't fun sitting in the cold, listening to the "fat dayhikers" eating my food.  We finally got to eat the leftovers with the crew, which made the work worth it.  Anyway, I'll finish up tomorrow.  Lights out.
