| Joys of Civilization Woke up this morning with a knock on the door - "Breakfast is ready." Oh, how sweet. Went downstairs to a delicious meal of french toast, eggs, bacon and sausage. What more could you want? You order breakfast at Shaw's in "arounds." A 1-around means that you have one of everything. It goes up to 4-arounds and then you start ordering two 4-arounds, etc. I had a "one-and-a-half-around." One of everything, except the french toast and sausage. I wanted two of those! Kevin had a two-around. The most anybody has ever eaten at their table is three 4-arounds with 18 eggs. Can you believe it?! He got up from the table and collapsed, so the story goes. They had to take him to the hospital... silly boy. After a relaxing breakfast, the junior Keith Shaw drove us around on errands - went to Rite Aid for a knee brace, to the ATM (for which we had to drive to a larger town for, just to put the size on Monson in perspective here) and then picked up some lightweight camp shoes. After that, we sent home our extraneous stuff (packed way too much gorp) and headed to the library where I updated our online journal. Then the whispering librarian closed the place down and booted me out before I could respond to all the e-mail and guestbook entries :( It's weird being out of touch with everybody and everything. First thing that Kevin and I did when we walked into our room yesterday was to turn on CNN. (Thinking of Huda, of course.) It seems like so much has happened since we left - both in the world and personally. Huda's current events update made me miss being there. Actually, all of the guestbook entries made me miss friends, family and the kitties (well, I guess they get clumped into the family category). It really feels like we've been gone for a month, not just 12 days. Time moves slower here. We finished up the day with BBQ at the only restaurant in town, chatted to a fellow making a movie about southbound AT hikers (hey! that's us!), and finished off a couple of beers with Cheech and Chong (they made it in this afternoon). - The Town Bobo |
