| Hi,
welcome to my corner... I'm an actor, based in
Dublin,
Ireland (at least, for the moment). |
| |
| I starting acting in 1991 at Dramsoc (the
student drama society) in
University College Dublin, where I was (supposed to be)
a postgrad. I met a bunch of fun guys and we formed
Fly By Night Theatre Company in
1992 and made our own shows. |
| |
| I went to Trinity
College Dublin in 1994 to train as an actor at the
Samuel Beckett Centre, graduating in 1996. |
| |
| From 1996 to 1999 I did several verse plays
with Loose
Canon Theatre Company, as well as Steven
Berkoff’s
Greek with
Bedrock Theatre Company, Flann O’Brien/Alex Johnston’s At Swim Two Birds at the
Peacock Theatre, some radio plays for
RTÉ (national broadcaster),
a reading of Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall for
Rough Magic Theatre
Company, and a couple of
blink-and-you’ll-miss-’em roles on TV. I also acted in the
films I Went Down and Saltwater. |
| |
| I’ve directed a little: a
short piece called Murphy by Flann O’Brien, Conor
McPherson’s This Lime
Tree Bower at the
Project, and I re-directed a little
bit of Anna Karenina for Theatreworks. |
|
|
| For the first half of
2000,
I
toured
Australia and France
with STANDOFFISH,
a performance I did
with Panpan
Theatre. |
| |
| In
France,
I joined Compagnie
du Hasard, a theatre company
based in Blois, and stayed
there for about a year and a
half.
We toured with Le Fleuve et Ses Criques, a Klezmer-style
performance for cafés/bars, in 2000, and
Le
Jeu de la Lune avec le Cèdre in 2001,
finishing off at the
Avignon Theatre Festival. |
| |
| I rejoined Loose
Canon Theatre Company at the end of 2001.
We did The
Duchess of Malfi in the 2002
Dublin Theatre Festival
and Hedda
Gabler at the
Project
in 2003. |
| |
| I left
Loose Canon in August 2003, and am developing (lovely
word that!) a couple of performances, one of which I intend
(another nice word) to perform in 2005. I pay the rent by
teaching (at Griffith College Dublin, usually). Sadly, the
Irish Arts Council only awards grants
to theatre companies, not to the people that constitute
them. So, if you leave a company, you leave behind your share of
the grant your work earned. I’ve done 37 plays! The Arts
Council hasn’t a clue :-( |
| |
| In January, I will be attending a workshop
given by the
Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards at the
University of Kent at Canterbury. |
