Q: How does cling film work? (I forget who actually asked this one... I think it's the same as above, actually) A: Cling film is an extremely complicated material. The sheets themselves are, impossible as this may sound, woven out of shrunken baby dragon teeth. They are too small to do any damage to anything, but when one layer of them comes into contact with another layer of them, they lock together reasonably securely to hold the layers together. Because cling film is often used in kitchens, where hygiene is of the utmost importance, the teeth are sterilised before shrinking, to avoid really really tiny bacterias and germs getting past the sterilising process because they are so small. Well it could happen. Fortunately, few germs and such are brave enough to go anywhere near dragons or their teeth, so once the cling film is applied, this protection is passed on, as it were, to what it covers. Anyway, the dragons are bred in mountain villages, where cling film is often the chief export (or at least amongst the main ones, other exports often including toilet paper and celery trimmers and other dragon related produce). It was invented by Mr. Clingle, who discovered it whilst trying to discover fire. He assumed that to make fire, you first develop a powerful shrinking ray, then use it on large numbers of mythical creatures, and then do something impossible with their teeth. These extreme difficulties led to him developing 'Clingle Fire' much later than the more well known version of fire, but as he was very isolated (spending much time in his room working on the plans) he didn't notice its discovery. When he put his invention to the world in the 1930's, they made him change it's name from 'Clingle Fire' because the name 'fire' would suggest, perhaps, that it was fire, and not what appeared to be a transparent film. It was changed to 'Clingle Film' and then abbreviated to 'Cling Film' gradually over a number of years. It's creator died several months after it's unveiling after his earlier prototypes of 'Clingle Fire' (at that time) spontaneously burst into flames, engulfing his house, the street which is was on, and for some reason another house some blocks away (people have speculated that this was in fact caused by something else, but the fire reports from the time are very clear on the matter). I hope this brief explanation and background will be of some use to you. |
