My Pagan Poetry

ROWAN'S WEDDING DANCE

(Not precisely pagan. Sort of about Anne Rice's Rowan Mayfair, and her optimism just before her marriage. Sort of about me. Thanks to the late Peter McWilliams for the idea of relationships as mirrors of our light and/or darkness.)

You said I was a fool and my feelings were wrong
Now listen to this, it's my victory song
Your love was dark and it sought to control
But I heard his voice and it sang to my soul
You locked me away in your high lonesome tower
But you can come see me in my finest hour
A princess in white lace and satin and flowers...
See me dance!

They say some of our lovers reflect back our light
While others just mirror the darkness inside
I never thought I'd feel that burning again
But who would have thought that Prince Charming would win?
You thought with your guilt you'd convince me to stay
But you won't be ruining my wedding day
When he'll say the words that you wanted to say...
See me dance!

This storm has been rumbling, now louder it comes
The thunder that stirs me like primitive drums
Your voice, still the skeptic, that tells me to run
But nothing can turn me away from the sun
You may have rained on my every parade
But you won't be ruining my wedding day
When darkness is conquered and love has its way...
See me dance!

THE BRIDE

(Refrain: Traditional. Verses: (c)2000, Kelly C. Lasiter.)

The Queen was in her fury, and the frost lay on the land
An icy silver hammer she carried in her hand
And within her frozen castle sat a maid with hair of gold
And despite her heart of fire, she shivered in the cold
Then through her high slit window she beheld the Queen's own son
The moon was bright upon his face; was this the worthy one?
"For if it is," she whispered, "then I shall be free;
I shall not touch the Queen, and the Queen shall not touch me."

Hail reign a fair maiden with gold upon her toe
Open up the West Gate and let the old year go
Hail reign a fair maiden with gold upon her chin
Open up the East Gate and let the new year in
Levideu sing Levideu the water and wine
The seven bright gold wires and the candles that do shine

Around him there were brambles, and paths that led nowhere
Before him there were walls to climb, yet he somehow made it there
Her smile was sure, her nod content, like the cat who's caught the mouse
She said just this, "I knew it! Now take me from this house."
So over barren fields they ran, and in her steps did grow
Blossoms of bright yellow, and some as white as snow
The ancient Queen, she followed; the cold wind gripped their bones
But so frigid and so hard was she that her hate turned her to stone

Hail reign a fair maiden with gold upon her toe
Open up the West Gate and let the old year go
Hail reign a fair maiden with gold upon her chin
Open up the East Gate and let the new year in
Levideu sing Levideu the water and wine
The seven bright gold wires and the candles that do shine

And so away they fled, and she put on her new green dress
Then she said, "Rest assured that I'm no damsel in distress.
The walls you climbed, the thorns you braved, the maze you clambered through,
And the old woman so ugly, who cast stony eyes at you,
All of these were me and me alone; they were a test;
You made it through my worst, my love, now you shall have my best."

GODDESS

((c)1999, Kelly C. Lasiter)

I am bright enchanted Maiden--
free of all fetters, in love with the world.
I am fierce and loving Mother--
She who fights for those she loves.
I am ancient Crone of Wisdom--
She who has learned and She who teaches.
I am Enchantress, Dark of the Moon--
Lady of Secrets, Powerful One.

I can create and I can destroy.
I can demolish then nurture again.
I can raise power to rule my own life.
I can dance naked for pure bubbling joy.
I am in tune with the cycles of Woman.
I am pure Virgin and Fire-of-Lust.
I can bear children to people the earth
Or set this aside to make fertile my mind.
I can conceive and I can make Art.
I can be faithful and I can betray.
I can be generous and give to the world.
I can draw inward and give to myself.
Sweet, effervescent, I sing in delight.
Warm and maternal, I heal and protect.
Wise and impartial, I judge and advise.
Veiled by darkness, in glamour I walk.

I am the Queen of Wild Things.
I am the Spark of Inspiration.
I am the Lady of Love and Pleasure.
I am sorrowing Sister and avenging Mother.
I am Gorgon and Venus, ugly and beautiful.
I am Isis and Nephthys, wife and mistress.
Grandmother, Mother, Sister, Daughter,
Friend, Lover, Teacher, Muse...
Woman.
I am Woman.
I am Myself.
I am Goddess.
