U.S. colleges and universities for wheelchair users

The primary goal of this site is to identify colleges and universities which offer total and hassle-free wheelchair accessibility right now. These schools foster a culture of full inclusion by having already eliminated architectural barriers, and by actively recognizing the need for and participating in the ongoing process of arranging for personal care attendants to help with daily transferring, bathing, toileting and medical needs. Also, specialized services such as wheelchair repair are often available on campus. Usually, schools with outstanding wheelchair accessibility also excel in services and accommodations for other disabilities.

This preliminary list of the best U.S. colleges and universities for wheelchair accessibility is based on information available on school websites identified by Internet searches. Within each website, I have linked to 'student services' or 'disability services.' (Usually there is a link back to the school's homepage for general information.) I used easy access to detailed information as a strong indicator of the quality of accommodations provided and the level of commitment to inclusion at the school. In all cases, don't forget that your state's Vocational Rehabilitation office is a critical part of the planning and/or financing process, and is a valuable resource. Links to state Vocational Rehabilitation offices are included in the list wherever possible.

Personal visits have only been made to Wright State University in Ohio, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, and University of Massachusetts-Amherst. This list will be updated and expanded periodically as I continue my research. Reviews, suggestions, corrections and additions are welcome at any time at [email protected]
