| Libraries, librarians and information scientists holding BA, MA and Ph.D. in Medical Library and Information Science who have a long-life experiences and have worked in a college or university library under some excellent supervisors, play a vital role in upgrading education, research, knowledge and information in any university or educational system, and society, if they are managed well, and innovated frequently. The minimum academic degrees of teaching staff in a college or university department in Tabriz, or rather in many academic centers of Iran, is MA, MS or their equivalents, while it is usual that the maximum of an academic degree holder in a college , university library, or public and school or private library in the same area is a BA in library science or its equivalent, and very rarely you may find one staff with a MA , M.Phil, or Ph.D. in library and information science field. The University graduates working in the university libraries always seem to be very humble people towards administrative behaviors and all office circumstances around themselve. But, the most important thing that they wish to reach is having status equal to those who teach in research and educational departments. The Medical Library and Information Science Department of Tabriz Medical Science University realized this matter from a long times ago. I, as a teacher and librarian did my best to make a compromise through establishing postgraduate courses in the Department of Medical Library and Information Science from 23rd September 2005 A.D./ 1st Mehr 1384 AHS. This department now accepts candidates who already have BAs' in library science and wish to continue his or her studies on MA in Medical Library and Information Science in Medical Science University of Tabriz. I am sure that all Graduates from MA courses will mostly be absorbed in Medical Libraries or educational departments throughout the country. The writer is very optimistic that the present National Employment Rules and Regulations in Iran also would be adjusted in the near future for the recruitments of those library workers who hold MA and Ph.D.in the field. I hope, one day, the adjusted recruitment rules and regulations would allow MA, M.Phil, and Ph.D. holders in library and information science, stay in the private, school, college and university libraries, where they already are working, and do not try to leave their present work and apply to be recruited somewhere else in a college or a university department. The majority of those MA, Mphil, and Ph.D. holders who want to work in a college or university department are mostly concerned in the amount of money they may receive for their new job. Nowadays, there is a great difference between the salaries, premiums and pensions of those academic degree holders who work in, e.g. a public library, university or college library and those who are teaching or making research in a college or university department. This great difference is a loss for the expansions and developments of public, university, school, and private libraries. I think, this is the duty of Iran Library Association to fulfill this gap and try to persuade government, and the parliament to pass laws and regulations helping MA, M. phil, and Ph.D holders in library and information science to work, mostly in public, school, and private libraries, rather than only enjoying teaching in college and Universisty Departments. I thinik, this is a disasterous situation for our library system to leave our library graduates to work in other places than libraries. We have now thousands of libraries and library graduates, but no systematic administration to bring them together and make, and construct a real network of libraries and librarians. When libraries and librarians without any sponsorship and controling are scattered all over the country and only working for themselves, sooner or later everybody will loss. Sooner or later we have to make networks of libraries and librarians throughout the country, and make them share their staff, resources and experiences with each othear through good behaviors of Iran Library Association. For the time being, most of the libraries even lack a library committee which is a very ordinary function for the libraries all over the world. Nobody knows what is going on in a library in our libraries. Libraries all over Iran seem to be closed systems which is the worst kind of administrative behavior in an organization. Problems of libraries and librarians are the problems of the whole nation, and the members of Iran Library Association are the sole legitimate librarians who can solve these problems by themselves. I request Iran Library Association to do their best in helping resolving this situation before someboldy else from other organizations come and tell us what to do, or not to do. |
