Heart of Darkness

In deep shadow, in dead silence,
Unsound nightmares are guarding the door of Darkness,
Standing ponderously ajar with down-cast eyes,
That gleamed with flames.
An immense yellow snake uncoiled and preceded me in.
It seemed uncanny and fateful
But, something was not quite right.
Without a word, I passed through
Into a place of cruel, absurd mysteries.
Where I came upon strong, lusty, red-eyed devils.
Who were smiling continuously with hidden knowledge
Of frightful realities of some inconceivable world
That had no hope in it and no desire.
The impression was so powerful and embracing.
It was not fit for a human to behold
But, I should be loyal
To the nightmare of my choice.
No. Without a word, I passed through.
