Mizuno Ami enters the SailorMoon story as another junior high girl at Usagi's school. Well, kind of another. Her reported i.q. is 300, and she is very smart, well educated, an ace at exam taking, and fixated on studying. She lives with her divorced mother, who happens to be a doctor, in a very nice and upscale apartment. When she first appeared, Luna is suspicious of her but as it turns out, Ami-chan is also the smart, kind-hearted and mild SailorMercury.Ami is a fairly interesting person, even though at times she appears to be the most single minded and boring of the Sailor soldiers. She is the shyest of all of them all, she is delicate -- not frail -- and soft spoken, most of the time at least =) Ami-chan is always eager to please and eager to help her friends when they are having trouble with their homework, or other issue regarding mind power.Ami-chan is an intellectual genius, and she is usually considered the brains of the outfit, but often her good ideas fall on deaf ears -- her friends'. But she would not force her opinions on anyone, Ami has a calm personality, she is sympathetic towards other people; she does not really like conflict, but she can be very strong and courageous when duty calls. Her personality, though, seems to centered on the fact that she likes to study, and she would like the other inner Soldiers to take studying seriously as well -- something her friends do not always appreciate. =) She wants to become a doctor in the future, but had to put this dream on hold a few times, for the sake of her friends. She very rarely loses control of her emotions, she claims she has no time to fall in love, she would pretend to tightly control the passion inside her, but to say she is emotionless is not true at all: she is just too shy to show her feelings openly, unless she's around her best friends.SailorMercury is the first Soldier to join SailorMoon. During the first few episodes, she seems to be a very close friend of SailorMars', but often ended up being pushed around by Rei-chan. She also seems to be very attached to Luna, and is probably the only inner Soldier who gives her the respect she deserves. Early in the series, Luna gives her a very cool and very powerful Mini Computer, which proves to be quite useful throughout the series. She also has a visor, which she uses to scan enemies, strange landscapes, you name it. Ami-chan is fairly stereotypical as the pleasant, delicate, feminine and overachieving girl who'd make any parent proud, and non-threatening enough to make her popular with the male fans -- and she is. It's interesting to note that she really doesn't have an openly tomboy-ish, forward, or "unrefined" side -- whereas all the other Soldiers do. But this doesn't mean she's the "weak" one, most likely, it just reveals the remarkable self control she displays to keep her emotions in check, and out of her logical reasoning.Because of her own dreams and expectations of herself, she may appear pretentious, but in reality, Ami-chan is very humble, although somewhat insecure of her own abilities. It would also seem that these feelings, a belief that she is not cut out to be a soldier -- rather than her natural, logical approach to conflict -- are what have turned her into a Soldier who'd avoid a confrontation, rather than one openly looking to battle, but this is not entirely true, even if she herself has believed it at times. Her personal ghosts have also made her the target of enemies seeking to manipulate her dreams, and her view of herself. In the manga, Fish's Eye uses this when trying to kill her, but she sees through his deception, and manages to turn the tables, and recover her Super transformation. In the later seasons of the anime, she is the shy, sometimes self absorbed, and sometimes funny voice of reason of the Sailor Team. Even though it seems like she would prefer to bury herself in school work, -- or after school work -- she's often way ahead of her friends when it comes to things other than studying, such as Usagi's love life and the Three Lights. =)SailorMercury's attacks are water and ice based, and she seems to be a more defensive fighter than the rest of the Sailor Soldiers. In a short movie about her allergy to love letters, however, she uses an attack called "Mercury Aqua Mirage," which seems to be as powerful as it is cool -- this attack also appears in the manga, but as a step below her Mercury Aqua Rhapsody. In the manga, her ultimate transformation is SailorStarMercury. She is also the Princess of the planet Mercury, and her home in the mother planet is Mariner Castle. |
