My paintings of Tulips

My mother had bought a vase of stoneware from Höganäs AB when she was employed at P Jansson AB in Norrköping. After Christmas we often had one lonely tulip in that vase. For the Maria-day Feb. 28th my wish always was "a yellow dubble tulip". I don´t know how many paintings with that vase I have done in school.
I love tulips because they change all the time, and they are beautiful even when they have died.

Some hundred years ago a tulip onion was extremely expensive in Western Europe.

In our church here in Perstorp some expressive tulips are painted on the alterpiece.

Painting tulips

Sketch with wax oil crayons.

I alter to paint with brush or knife but never both in the same painting. Actually I only use one brush with a certain number for a specific painting.
Sometimes I first make a drawing with crayons on the canvas and sometimes I just start to paint somewhere in the motif.

The sketch edited with terpentune

The glass, the croquet cloth and the shadows in the leaves painted with oilcolours.

I had to give the tulips a heavy ground to balance the flowers. I didn´t want them to fly around as during a space flight.

The background is finshed and the tulip boquet is going to be painted.

You can see the result in one of the the rows above.
I couldn´t get the perfect pink colour with the oilcolours I used as I could with the crayons.
The minerals used for different oilcolours make them behave in different ways. I think that this is the charm with traditional oilcolours.
