a couple of nights ago, h1-west came to a standstill for almost twelve hours. a military truck towing a crane clipped a pedestrian overpass, severely damaging it and deeming it a hazard. the department of transportation closed down all six lanes of the westbound freeway as they worked to tear the overpass down.

jon kept me updated throughout the night while i was at work, relaying stories he heard on the news. after closing the store and dropping my coworker jessica off at home in chinatown, i prepared to make the four-hour journey home. jess and i decided the best route would be to take salt lake boulevard rather than the freeway or nimitz highway. from vineyard boulevard i made my way through kalihi to salt lake. and found myself taking an HOUR to travel 1.5 miles from the ahua street chevron to the salt lake shopping center on ala lilikoi.

thankfully, kamehameha highway was moving nicely, albeit slowly, but at least it was moving and it took me only another 45 minutes to get home. i finally arrived at home a little past one o'clock. i consider myself very lucky as my four-hour journey only turned out to be a little less than two. it could have been WAY worse.

tomorrow night we're having dinner at the golden dragon in the hilton hawaiian village with a friend of jon's parents. i'm really looking forward to it, as jon and i haven't eaten chinese for awhile. and panda express does NOT count. the last chinese restaurant i went to was the golden palace in chinatown with nicole and rachel some time last year. there's a chinese place in the marketplace at work, but i'm a little wary of it.

pregnancy-wise, i'm not at all worried about eating chinese food. the baby seems to like its asian dishes, especially spicy ones. in the last ten days, i've had kimchi fried rice THREE times, spicy curry and shrimp pad thai. and sriracha and red pepper flakes have been an even more constant condiment. since the beginning of my pregnancy, i noticed that eating spicy foods seemed to quell my nausea, and i've found myself literally at peace when eating a bowl of kimchi chigae. yes, the baby is DEFINITELY korean.
