jon and i had the day off together again. i actually had specifically requested it off a week ago. i had gotten so frustrated last week when i was called into work on one of my days off, that i had demanded a day off of my choosing. but i realize now that maybe i shouldn't have because jon just recently found out that ub40's back on the island on wednesday and thursday, the two days that i'm working until ten o'clock. :b
anyway. we spent some time walking around ala moana and then headed for a fun day at the zoo. we were really excited since, although there was still a lot of construction going on, some of the new habitats were already open.
this time we got to see both the lions and the cheetah. as well as my absolute favorite. the hippos! they're SO cute. yes. yes. i know they're very dangerous as well. but they're just so darn adorable.
there was some excitement in the chimpanzee cage when one of the chimps stole a treat from another chimp. and it was quite interesting watching a giraffe chase an ostrich.
a few years ago, i had the great privilege of seeing the cirque du soleil when i went with iris and her family to vegas and we went to see "mystere". when i heard that there would be a similar production here in hawaii, i just HAD to go see it. and when i recently came into possession of a "buy one get one free" flyer, i couldn't pass up the chance.
held in the former imax, the theater is fairly small, creating a really intimate atmosphere, but not making a difference between the general seating and the vip section. especially since there isn't any assigned seating. we could've very well have paid for general seating and still have gotten seats in the vip section. i really think the ushers need to do a better job.
although the show was created by former cirque du soleil members, you can't go with the expectation of a cirque du soleil show such as "o" in mind. you'll be sorely disappointed. the scale of cirque hawaii is much smaller, but the grandeur is still reminiscent of the larger production. it follows the story of a girl named josephine, who journeys in search for the best talents for her exotic circus. lucky me that i read about it somewhere. even then, it was still a bit hard to understand what was going on. hopefully in time, programs will be offered during the show to inform the audience in more detail of the story and the characters.
overall, although there were a few things that i was dissatisfied with, i was very pleased with the show and consider it a wonderful experience. i'll admit that i'm grateful that i had the flyer. i'm not quite sure if i still would've been as satisfied with the show if i hadn't. considering that jon was already upset as it was that i paid $75.00. if you decide to pay for the vip seating, find a seat towards the back of the section. the front seats put you up close with the performers, but during such acts like the bungee and the trapeze, all of it is happening overhead or you're constantly turning your head to view everything, so you don't get the whole effect.
