my auntie's father past away yesterday. for the past few years, he has been under the caring attention of the staff at the hilo medical center extended care unit. although his passing was not completely unexpected, it still came as a surprise to all of us. we are grateful that he passed on peacefully and that he has lived a very healthy and full life before leaving us.
reminiscing about him, my auntie told me that when i was about three, my mom wasn't able to find me a babysitter for a couple of weeks so i went to the kawakami house to be looked after. one day i was sitting on mr. kawakami's lap and i told him, "can i call you daddy because i don't have one?" my auntie said that i made him tear when i asked him.
unfortunately, i don't remember that. but i do remember him as being a nice person, not at all like a lot of those other grumpy old men. and i also remember that he looked the same now as he did when i was little, a constant smile and buzzed hair that was as white as snow.
my condolences and sympathy to my auntie and her family.
