My PopPop (Cassaday) is a knowledge buff like me. My itch to travel to new places, meet new people and learn new things came from him. Any trip with PopPop is special, both the live ones and the slide shows. He knows so much about so many things that in many ways he has been a role model to me, even though we have been separated by hundreds of miles my whole life. If you want to know about Israel, Philadelphia or the churches of South Jersey (to mention a few) this "retired" pastor is the one to go to, and Im very proud to claim that he is MY PopPop.
Howard Leon Cassaday (PopPop) was born January 27 1924 in Bridgeton Hospital, NJ. His parents were Charles and Marjorie(Campbell). He has one sister, Marian.
PopPop went to Elmer Grammar school until eighth grade. He then graduated from Bridgeton H.S. He also studied at the Drexel Institute of Technology (in Philadelphia) and later at Crozer Seminary in Chester, PA and Eastern Seminary, N.Y.U.
Before I knew him my PopPop worked at Scony-Vacuum, Kimble Glass, and Owens-Illinois. By the time I was born he had changed professions and was pastoring with the United Methodist Church in Southern Jersey.
PopPop married my Gram, Grace Marie Rathbone October 30 1948 at the Elmer Methodist Church. They had three kids, Suzanne, Charlotte and Charles. Im forever grateful that they had Charlotte because she later became my Mom!
PopPop is supposed to be retired now, but we all know better. He is pastor at Friendship United Methodist Church in Landisville, NJ. He also has worked to put together the histories of several southern Jersey churches. He has also made several trips to Israel and England (now you see where I get my itchy feet from). The rest of us have been able to take trips there through his wonderful slide shows.
Well, thats my PopPop in a nutshell. I hope you have enjoyed this short version of his life as much as I have enjoyed having PopPop in my life
