Surrealism Project

Now that you have been exposed to different surrealist images, ideas and texts, it is time for you to work on your own surrealist artistic creation. Here are some ideas as to the type of work you may want to create:

~ A painting, drawing or sculpture that incorporates some of the surrealist artistic techniques that you have been introduced to.

~An automatic writing assignment accompanied by an automatic drawing. You should analyze both for meaning produced by your subconscious.

~A written or visual representation of one of your dreams. You should analyze this representation using Freud’s interpretation method that you experimented with in class.

~A short film that incorporates surrealistic themes and elements.

~A couple of surrealistic poems and an essay that explains the meaning you draw from these poems.

~ Other – If you choose to experiment with a different type of surreal representation, please run your idea by me first.

Your grades for this project will be based on the following:

Artistic creation, including creativity and style – 30 pts

Paper, ideas, organization and clarity – 20 pts

Oral presentation – 10 pts

** Remember each project must be accompanied by a report (min 2pgs). The report should describe your project and offer an analysis of what you think the surreal work represents in terms of your subconscious reality. It should also include a reflection on your creative processes. Conclude by explaining your reasons for liking/or disliking surrealism and the ideas and theories that accompany it. The project will be due on Monday, and you will have to give a short (1-2min) oral presentation to the class.**
