Pepsi, Coke soft drinks
contain pesticides, says CSE
NEW DELHI:
Close on the heels of a major health scare on
finding pesticides in bottled drinking water, an
NGO on Tuesday claimed that the bottled soft
drinks owned by two MNCs -- Pepsico and Coke --
also failed the same health standards testing
positive for pesticides.
"Twelve major cold drink brands sold in
Delhi and around contain a deadly cocktail of
pesticide residues," the Centre for Science
and Environment (CSE) said here on Tuesday.
Officials of both Pepsico and Coke declined to
comment on the tests saying the two companies
would be holding a joint press conference later.
According to the tests conducted by Pollution
Monitoring Laboratory (PML) of the CSE, all
samples contained residues of four extremely
toxic pesticides and insecticides: Lindane, DDT,
Malathion and Chlorpyrifos.
The three member PML team involved in the tests
was Dr H B Mathur, Dr Sapna Johnson and Avinash
Kumar.
Three samples each of the 12 brands purchased
from markets across the city, analysed in
April-August and found to contain pesticides
residues are Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Diet Pepsi,
Mirinda Orange, Mirinda Lemon, Blue Pepsi, 7-UP,
Coca Cola, Fanta, Limca, Sprite and Thumbs Up.
Mathur said these pesticides included potent
carcinogens which could cause cancers and reduce
bone mineral density.

The Financial EXpress
CSE Likely To Take Cola
Pesticide Battle To Court |
|
New
Delhi, Aug 7: The Centre for Science
and Environment (CSE) appeared unimpressed by
advertisements and fact sheets being put out by
the cola giants. In a counterattack on Coke and
Pepsi, CSE boss Sunita Narain said her team has
gone through every bit of information on quality
and standards that the two US globocorps have
promised on various websites. A careful
analysis of whatever data they have put up
confirms what we had feared all along: they (Coke
and Pepsi) never tested their (aerated)
products, Ms Narain told FE.
Theres no (relevant) product
info!
Faced with a
possible defamation law suit, Ms Narain said CSE
will fight for the only thing it has, which is
its reputation. The only thing I have
is my reputation. We will fight for that. They
think journalists are a bunch of fools. You
cant call us (CSE) names and get away. When
we took on this project, we knew we were taking
on the worlds biggest. We knew we have to
be right on every single fact. We did that. We
did not allude to any motives by any particular
company. But now, they (Coke and Pepsi) have
dared to call us all kinds of names, question our
intent. CSE is contemplating legal option. CSE
cant be called names, Ms Narain said.
On why CSE
has launched such a shrill mass media campaign,
Ms Narain mentioned three objectives. First, her
belief that companies must be held accountable
for what they are doing with the consumer.
Second, the governments framework
regulating them should not become lax, instead it
should get tighter. More privatisation will
need more government (regulation), which is
missing at present. Finally, the basic
issue of water contamination and the presence of
pesticides.
But
hasnt CSE strayed from its original
theme of contaminated water (which its
publication Down to Earth highlighted in
February) into the much smaller (and newsy)
domain of alleged violations by Coke and Pepsi?
Ms Narain said both issues are of equal
importance to her. We started out on the
broad theme of water contamination, but as we
went along, the cola issue has assumed as much
importance. Pepsi has questioned CSEs
bonafide on the subject, because its labs
dont have accreditation or certification
from the National Accreditation Board for Testing
& Caliberation for Laboratories. Ms
Narains counter? How do they know I
didnt. In any case, she doesnt
give too much credence to the so-called
accredited labs. Without singling out any
particular lab, Ms Narain said tell me a
report that you want (from these labs), and you
can get it.
On examining
the data, which PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have made
public, heres what CSE has to say: *
Cokes data pertains to Kinley,
one of its products, which is a bottled water
product. The simple reason for Coke releasing
this data in the first place is because CSE
forced it to analyse the pesticide residues on a
regular basis and because of the new norms and
notifications being issued by the government of
India. This is not data related to its soft drink
product. It is not even data for the plants that
manufacture soft drinks.
* In the
case of Pepsi as well, the data relates to its
Aquafina plants - and the tests have
been done for raw water and treated water.
* On the
website mentioned in its advertisement, PepsiCo
has published the results of tests on only one
bottle of Pepsi (presumably Cola) from its
Mathura plant. This confirms the statement made
by the director of Vimta Labs, Dr SP Vasi Reddy,
to CSE that Vimta has received only two samples
of Pepsi in March, this year.
* PepsiCo
results in two cases also say that pesticide
residues in the source water were less than that
found in the treated water! Therefore, the
bottomline is that this data is not comparable.
